Just to clarify shops can still sign, they don't like to but they are obliged to.
Prime example how can a blind person enter a pin number into a pin machine. They can however make a mark.
Card cloning is very easy, this is why you are reminded not to let your card out your site and then they can use any "blank card" in the past they have been found to use mobile phone top up cards to create a clone.0 -
please forgive me for being a novice but what is a 'SAR' and how do I go about getting one? Thanks0

... Another strange detail is that when i received a copy of the fraudulent transactions the cc had a different expiry date than the genuine article...
If the cc expiry date is wrong, your card almost certainly wasn't swiped in the reader. (Magnetic readers either read a card or fail to read a card, they don't 'mis-read' an expiry date.)
So I would guess the number was keyed in. Does it have the word "KEYED" on the copies of the receipts that you received?
But I'm very surprised that keyed transactions with the wrong cc expiry date were accepted. Checking the expiry date is supposed to be a basic security check to stop this type of fraud.
Have you ever lost a credit card statement (in the post or otherwise)? Or any other document with your cc number on?
It could be that somebody got your cc number from a statement and keyed it into the machine at the shop. CC statements don't have cc expiry dates on them (partly for security reasons - precisely to stop this type of fraud).
If this is really what happened, I guess the shop keeper must have been involved in the fraud - keying in a credit card number from a piece of paper, and allowing the customer to sign.0 -
Just to clarify - you sign if you have a chip and signature card.Just to clarify shops can still sign, they don't like to but they are obliged to.

With a chip and pin card a pin should be entered and the terminal says yes or no.
If the reader for any reason cannot get a positive reply and the shop lets you sign, the liability of any fraud changes from the bank to the retailer.0 -
Our cc's were about to expire. We did not receive replacements ahead of time which make me wonder if somehow they were intercepted. It just seems v odd that they were only (to my knowledge) used twice and on the same day that I went into the store. Not before or since.Guess it will remain one of life's little mysteries.0
