New Broadband provider needed

I am moving in just over two weeks, and have to change internet service providers. Have been with NTL, but I cannot just transfer my current package as I am moving into a non-cable area

I have spent absolute ages today browsing the net to find out what I can about the various options available to me, and am now dizzy, and no more enlightened than I was earlier!

One of the problems I am encountering is negativity! All I find is reviews which give negative feedback about providers. Now of course I realise there is always going to be a group of people that have had bad experiences, but what about the rest of the customer base. I am wondering what they DO, in fact like about their service provider.

I really dont need hassles with this move (I have more than enough drama to deal with at this time). I am trying to make an informed decision, but am finding it very challenging indeed!

Basically I spend a lot of time online, the usual bunch of e-mails per day, participate on a few forums such as this one, surf the net for various bits of info etc,and listen to radio via internet. I do not download movies and very very seldom, if ever, download any music

I had contemplated SKY, but then have read some very bad reviews. I had thought of a Virgin package I was told of when I spoke to them (when I cancelled my current set up) for £17.99 per month, up to 8 mb speed, unlimited usage. I do not need an added phone package, so am quite happy to go with the basic BT line, Option 1. Maybe wireless within my home would be useful, altho not essential. I do not have kids, and it is only my computer in the house.

I would really appreciate your thoughts and comments, as I am going more dizzy by the minute. I am willing to pay a bit more if it is going to mean a better and more reliable service, as I depend on my internet access for all sorts of reasons

Many thanks

;)

    Take a look at Zen.

Not the cheapest, but service is excellent.

They come out very well on thinkbroadband's comparisons chart (no matter who you compare them with):

  • Newnet - good solid basic service - https://www.newnet.co.uk/broadband/

Can't fault them been with them since the demise of Metronet.

Am also looking at other providers as my 1st year contract with MAAF is just ending. Have looked at the Newnet offer and their LITE package at £12.95seems to be on par with MAAF. £17.99. It offers up to 8mb speed , up to 3gb download per month MAAF is 2gb) and usual email etc. I must say that MAAF has been an excellent provider and cant fault their service but feel that their prices now dont compare favourably with others.
I dont use the line excessively, do some surfing, use Ebay a lot, dont download films, download the odd bit of music occasionally, dont think i've used more than 1.5gb in any month.
Does anyone have anymore recomendations for providers around this price bracket and can confirm that I have read the Newnet offer correctly !!!!
Just read the Newnet blurb again, why do I have to pay £35 for a connection ?

    No, you don't !
That's only for new connections (people with no broadband)

If you can get a MAC code, then migration is Free!

as stated, half way down on pricing :)
  • Whatever you do ...
dont even think of - Homecall - PIPEX - ....
any upgrade of service starts a new 12 month contract,
thats without your knowledge , they will tell you to read the small print
    if you complain....C. S. a total joke .
    You have been warned
  • Another thumbs up for Zen Internet from me. Consistantly fast access, up until 1st March one of the TRULY unlimited providers (limiting me to 100GB a month from 1st March :-) )

As in life, you get what you pay for. pay £9.99 a month for Broadband and you will get rubbish service.

Check out UKFSN (https://www.ukfsn.org) , £19.99 for Home Max 30 (30GB peak and 300GB offpeak). They've got a very good reputation.

If you haven't checked out adslguide already then I suggest you do that, http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk (UKFSN come under the Entanet umbrella)

I know Zen have had a couple of recommendations but they're not cheap compared to some other ISPs, £34.99 for a 50GB allowance for example, you'd be better off with UKFSN and save yourself £15pm!

    Cheers
