Please can we concentrate on answering the OP's question.
To the OP:
Assuming that you can play regular shop-bought CDs in the car then the best way forward is:- Forget about DVDs
- Buy some blank CD-R disks (the most commonly supported format) avoid other types of blank CDs
- If you haven't got CD burner software such as Nero installed then Download and install CDburnerXP as per M5rcc's post
- Easy media creator should already have the Audio CD option built-in
- In the CD Burner software choose the Audio CD option and add MP3 files as required. then hit burn now. I'm not familiar with CDburner XP so I can't give specific directions.
- The above should give an Audio CD capable of being played in 99% of Car CD players.

These days I'm wary of using CDBurnerXP, due to the inclusion of OpenCandy.

OP, can you write other types of files to CD using this drive?
Anything - Pictures, Word Docs, etc?
If you can do this, that verifies the drive is working. Then proceed to using one of the CD burning software options above to get the mp3s onto disc.0 -
It is a JVC CH-X350 which according to a manual I seen online uses only "finalized" CD-Rs. Can anyone tell me what a "finalized CD-R" is?0

I can copy photos to the cd but every time I put a cd into the drive it wants to burn the same photos on to that cd too!0 -
before saying anything. what type of cd player has your father got. is it a CD player that can play mp3's directly from cd meaning you can get about 250 songs on 1 cd for it. or is it just a standard cd player. if its the 2nd type you'll need to convert the mp3's in cdda format which should be done by the cd burner software that m5rcc mentioned
if its a mp3 cd player then just drag and drop and burn as a data cd.
with most cd players you can use CD-RW or CD-R.
I have downloaded the program but how do I convert the mp3's into cdda format?0 -

By telling the program to burn you a Music CD or Red Book CD instead of a data CD. I haven't used the program, someone who has will have to say which buttons to press.
Windows and/or the program should Finalise the disc before you eject it from the drive.0 -
The OP has Vista which on Windows Media Player you can burn audio CD's with that and its perfectly easy to do.
Insert a blank CD-R drag and drop which music you want on the disc, and select start burn:)
So why has the OP been advised to download software which it seems is already confusing to them?0 -

D'oh I clean forgot about using WMP to make an audio CD. I'm so used to using Nero. Using WMP will finalise the CD.
