Cleaning up C drive

I only have 7% disc space left, so I was thinking that I should free up a bit of space. The computer isn’t running slow or anything, but each time I add an update it chips away at it and there isn’t much room for adding new software.

There are a couple of programs I could delete if I needed the space as I don’t use them that much, but I will see if I can free up space other ways first. I’ve also tried the windows disk clean up, but there isn’t much there and I’ve used CCleaner to empty up some space.

A couple of things come to mind. There are some things that have been updated and I was wondering whether I still needed the old updates.

I have:
Java (TM) 6 Update 18
Java (TM) 6 Update 21
Java (TM) 6 Update 7
Java (TM) 7 Update 3

Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1
Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 service pack 2
Microsoft.NET Framework 3.0 service pack 2
Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5 SP1
Microsoft.NET Framework 4 Client Profile
Microsoft.NET Framework 4 Extended

Do I need all these, or could I remove some of them. They are about 100MB’s each.

Also, my D drive is pretty empty. Could I run programs on that? Keep what is needed to keep the computer running on the C drive, and have things like office, anti spyware etc on the D drive. Just uninstall them from the computer and reinstall them on the D drive. Can I do that?

Use CCleaner, do a full analyse scan and clean, then start removing the aforementioned rubbish.

You might also like to have a look at TreeSize Free. It'll help you find things that can be deleted.

If your C and D partitions are on the same physical hard disk you could delete D, having backed-up its contents, and extend C to use all of the space.

Keep C: for your system/programs and move your data to D:

Sounds that it is possible you are usung Vista? I say that in that this OS system grows too much in my opinion.

I understand that you have yr Data already on D: - so is it possible the split of the drive is not best suited to yr needs?

If so try this freeware to re-orgainse the split -
    http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html

First shrink the D drive, and make sure the free space is located between C & D, Secondly then expand the C drive. Don't try and do both operations in one go.

To do that, the OP would probably have to shrink d, move d, then expand c - which if it fails at any stage, wouldn't be a good idea without a backup.

Use windirstat to find out what's using the space, it's hard to give any advice without some figures - how big is each partition, how much data is in each, and what operating system?

How big is your harddrive?, or how big is C and D ? or have you got a really small harddrive?

Java easy, i use JavaRA JavaRa is a simple tool that does a simple job: it removes old and redundant versions of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE).
used it on many a time. no system problems on the OS that i used it on, before upgrading.

    things you can remove safely.

1 you windows temp folder. CCleaner will do that.
2 internet temp folder or firefox cache as above.
i suggest you dont clean the registry this could cause problems.
