before doing a clean install, make a new XP Sp3 cd, do not install xp and then install sp3, as this will use more space, where as slipstreaming the windows xp and sp3 would be smaller. I dont know why it just is.

a how to do it is available here http://lifehacker.com/386526/slipstream-service-pack-3-into-your-windows-xp-installation-cd using Nlite you can also add your 25 digitcode so you dont have to type it in + plus your drivers for your system.
But please backup your OS drive before using the disc using something like TODO BACKUP free and creating a recovery cd/dvd.

I reinstalled XP slipstreaming SP3 using Nlite with no problems.
The Lifehacker link is a bit old and the WinUpdatesList only gave details of the updates since SP3 rather than the ability to copy the files themselves like RyanVM's program that hasn't been updated since 2009. I found a program called Windows Updates Downloader but could not find many recommendations for it so I left it alone.

Use CCleaner, do a full analyse scan and clean, then start removing the aforementioned rubbish.

Anyone who is cleaning their PC or laptop for the first time should start with CCleaner.

I also recommend WinUtilities Free :)

I always used Autopatcher to update my xp pro sp3, think the other program was called WSUS.

    http://download.wsusoffline.net/

and autopatcher is still going but they no longer build the exe files, all files are download through microsoft download site.

    www.autopatcher.com

currently goes to Feb 2012, when run for xp pro sp3, but it does now do windows 7
