yes you can camp for free!!
we canoed the caladonian canal from fort william to inverness a few years ago now,and camped by the locks for free.most locks had toilet facilities and some even had shower blocks, all free.i think it had a lot to do with the trespass laws in the much more sensable thinking scotland.had a absolute great time

Several free sites have been established by communities in the Western Isles of Scotland, facilities vary but are basic at best but they tend to be in remote, beautiful locations.

How about a yurt in wales?

This is a nice place with nice owners:.....
Nice bit of free advertising which has little to do with the OP's query, given that the prices are *35 quid per adult per night, with a minimum 2 night stay*

OP - if you sign up to the camping and caravanning club you get discounted pitch fees and access to cheap temporary sites, plus the use of smaller sites in certificated locations.

You can wild camp if you ask the land owner's permission first and/or are discreet. As others have said, Scotland is great for wild camping but they do have the dreaded midges

Note that to wild camp you need to be away from the road. As in a few miles and out of sight. There will be no toilets or even a tap and setting a fire on moorland is inadvisable at best.

It would be better to travel less distance and save on fuel than to try to save on the campsite, and caravan hire is quite a step up pricewise.

As the OP's BF had since requested something like a caravan which would not be free, (see prev posts) I thought this site (which we have stayed at) & which has a seperate kitchen & proper bathroom might fit the requirements of camping with facilities without having to pack it all yourself. They also offer mobile heaters if its chilly!

Well I just been told by the boyf he woukd prefer a caravan or somethin in september than a tent in may. Will have to have a rethink!

It's a nice place, it's quiet & best of all, hardly any mobile signal :D so you can truly chill out.

I only suggest places we've been to & liked so it's not just "free advertising". There are lots of yurt places out there & most cost far MORE. Feel free to google :p

It may give someone out there a chance to consider a version of camping that they would not have looked at before;)

I don't mind camping but I do resent having to dig a hole at midnight if there are no loos. This meets the kipping under canvas with brick built bogs criteria:D

As cost seems to be a more important factor the 'joy' of camping, I'd ditch the tent and wait for the autumn £10 Travelodge sale or look out for a Pontins deal.

Clumber Park in Nottinghamshire has a nice little campsite which is very cheap with clean but basic facilities, and they have wigwams (i.e. wooden huts) which are also fairly cheap with light and heating, if you don't want a tent. Lovely countryside around and nice walks which are free. I stayed there with my boyfriend last year and it was lovely.

The mirror have a "camp for 95p" offer on. have a look at it and if you see any you like, buy the daily mirror a few days (wouldn't normally advocate buying that rubbish lol, but as a money saver I dont cut off my nose to spite my face lol. Or you may be able to cadge the vouchers off someone who buys it, as i do! Each voucher is worth one nights camp at 95p. But be careful, some of the sites have "extrs" added on., Check with them first!
