I was pleased to see this thread - I've got stacks of cookery books - going back to the 60's & before - when you only used olive oil for your ears & all the foreign spices were totally alien.
Did anyone collect the Cordon Bleu mags that came out in the late 60's early 70's - Definitley ideas above my station :), as I had to teach myself to cook - not really the place to start :) but I did have a go at a lot of the recipes - when I could get hold of the ingredients - which wasn't very often.
Its worse when you get a Kindle, you just store them. But if you go to http://www.ereaderiq.co.uk/ you can get 100's of them for free.

    I have about 50.

I do have a pile of the ones I have had a long while and never made anything out of though, I'm going to donate those.

I've got most things covered now but I can't resist some-especially when I find one with history and culture references in. I do need to be much more restrained though...ie buy-read-copy out interesting recipes-pass on... The internet has millions too.

:wave: Count me in. I have inherited cookbooks from my Gran and Greataunts, they are so old and beautiful. I also have collected quite a few old books from antique book shops, I just love them. I do use quite a few of the books on a regular basis. Family and friends 'feed' my addiction as presents. I can honestly say I really wouldn't part with them, from a social history point of view they tell us so much about the way that people lived. Of course now I have a Kindle I have got rid of a lot of my 'reading' stuff but I couldn't go without my hard copy cookerybooks.

Anyway, what is just one addiction between friends?:rotfl:

I have loads of cookery books too but they are all packed up while I've had some work done on the house. I haven't 'alf been twitchy !!

I have never ever cooked fish (well except for fishfingers but they don't really count !) so I'm looking for a good fish cookbook that covers buying and preparing fish and is suitable for beginners.

So dear Cookbook Oracles what do you recommend ?

Hi my name is Corrag and I have a Cook Book addiction.

I've recently brought 'Good Housekeeping family meals for a fiver' and I actually made something from it!!! Moroccan Spiced Chicken Kebabs, and they were lovely. The only problem was I didn't have the herbs and spices it needed so it cost me £15 the first time. However I've made it since and just need to buy the chicken this time.

I've also brought my son Osbournes Cooking for Beginners which is a childrens cookery book. We've made chewy ricecrispy cakes, a roast chicken with mixed peppers and a Filo pastry tart.

I've nagged and nagged for Delia Smiths 'How to cook' book but haven't made a thing from it. Also it jumped off the shelf and the spine is cracked so I'd had to hide it on the bookshelf.

I have about 20 other books that I like to look at but haven't made a thing from :o

    -No buying of Cosmetics Challenge

I am a nervous fish cook. It takes a lot to get me to leave my comfort zones of fish cookery (i make perfect pan fried salmon by a fool proof method, and a nice baked cod dish and fish mousses, and brandade (which i cannot spell i don't think thats right) and - few other things. My rick stein book is challenging my fear and encouraging me to be braver and braver. It is an excellent book imo,

I would love to know your perfect pan fried salmon as I have never quite perfected it yet and would really appreciate a fool proof method:T:T

Yes Im addicted to. The recent being the Hairy Bikers Bake-ation and Hummingbird Bakery Cake Days. I also like the Cookery magazines and had subscriptions but after you have done a year there is a lot of repeats so put my subscriptions to the book fetish now:rotfl:
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

    Of course!
The secret imo is a non stick frying pan with a lid.
I put the salmon in to a tiny bit of oil/butter on a high heat skin side down till the skin is crispy and the flesh of the salmon is opaque about a third of the way up. Then i turn it, pop the lid on and turn the heat off, leaving the pan on the heat. Then i make my veg ir put a salad together while it finishes. There is enough residual heat to cook the salmon through but not pvercook it....its only just opaque right the way through. When i worked i used to do this first thing through the door, then nip and have a shower and get out of my work clothes and come down to cooked fish to have with salad. Sometimes i baste the fish with honey and while grain mustard first, sometimes i have it with tomotoes i have dressed with balsamic, but favourtie all is a cheat: a bottle of some expensive dressing called spicey seafood dressing, which is delicious. But however i serve it the salmon is always perfect, and really easy to do.

Thank you lostinrates. I'll keep my eye out for Rick Steins book and try and take it from there.
Thanks also for the pan fried salmon idea. Thats one I'll attempt over the weekend.
