Support Each Other in Looking For Work - Pt 2

So, by the age of 20, my Dad was well on the way to owning his first home.
I on the other hand, cannot afford a second-hand garden shed, in a state of disrepair. (I'm not kidding, I've just seen an ad for one down the road for £60).
I may only be 20, and have paid a minimal amount in tax, but god knows I've already realised I'm paying it to the wrong government.
I need to move out of this country.0 -
All depends on "recession timing" as to how bad it might be in another country compared to here, it's a fight all right - and Canada's doing OK but you'd better like winter if you're going there and Google the Canadian high commission for the rules about working there.
Xmas job finished New Year's Eve, now waiting to hear about the next one and trying to keep concentrating on the other apps now there's a wait, at least if it's a no they'll still call me so I can move straight on.0 -
Job Centre tomorrow.
NHS Interview day after.
Chasing up two large companies after successful phone interviews.
Applied for a very good sounding Payroll position today.
Will I be employed by the end of Jan? I doubt it!0 -
my turn i have an interview next friday:footie:0

I attended an interview back in December, a few days before Christmas and I found out that I was successful but the job had been withdrawn and they had placed me on a waiting list.
So it's back to applying again.0 -
My turn tomorrow with an interview, which will let me test out the route as there will be commuting again to within one stop of where I was working three years ago. Off to buy a new tie and belt as the old ones took a battering in my last couple of jobs and just look tatty with age, and will go for it.
It's still winter so if I have a haircut it won't be too severe!
Had another call before that one but waiting to hear means nothing to me, it's all about grabbing the first offer and getting cash coming in rather than trying to be clever and juggling with some other "grass is greener" job.0 -
Interview wasn't a disaster but I was severely stressed and rattled by wasting the time that I was early, finding the place and my least favourite online map service in the world, showed pictures of the right road but the wrong turning. Got there in the end, and on time, but writing it off because of being stressed.
Lesson learned, another interview's coming next week and I will call them back and tell them (in a polite way) that a Google map isn't good enough and get concrete directions out of them as it now costs too much to do practice routes.

Three months later, had some good work ie the jobs were temporary but lasted a month rather than a few days here and there so that was winter all paid for.
As I was writing this post a deadline day job came up, still liked the look of it so applied for it on top of all the others today, nothing ventured and so on. It's also good discipline to have taken a lunch break but still come back to do two more apps and be aiming for a third one before 5 and now it stays light until 8pm, have an extended work day if the jobs are there, there's nothing on TV and I want more apps done at the start of the week just in case it goes dead for May Day.
Friends in other parts of the country have found work by just drilling away like this so I just have to keep checking every source and going for whatever's around but also be more interview-ready. Nice to feel like things are looking up anyway, I haven't felt this good in a while.0 -
Good to see this thread bumped!
Interview today - a disaster really. The person who was listed as interviewing me did not so I ended up with 3 people interviewing who all seemed to have different agendas. I need to wear two hats for this role, but I felt I was at two interviews at once - as interviewer 1 (for hat 1) and interviewer 2 (for hat 2) had not co-ordinated (last minute?). The third interviewer wasn't even in the department I was going to - but did all the talking (not hr).
I built a rapport as much as possible with the person who I would be working very closely with (interviewer 1, hat 1) and would be the one needing to rely on and trust my skills, but left with the impression that he had the least influence on the decision!
Interviewer 2, hat 2, said my skills were too much based on hat 1. But the job description is very hat 1.
This is a big corporate, could they not just have found someone from hr to manage this?
Sometimes it is hard to chalk it up to experience and not get upset.
I am finding interviews getting harder not easier and I am starting to get exasperated with them - I am sure it's beginning to show!

Sad to hear that November5th, the "political" interview where you're not interviewed by the person you're told it will be, or even the future boss, as you say sounds like a HR screwup or sometimes even a deliberate pressure test.
It did go dead for May Day but that's not such a bad thing, means I can spend proper time on the two good ones and it's less likely that they would close the positions early if they extended them by another day.0
