I had this exact same dilemma yesterday. I had a large item that was stored in our diningroom and we couldn't use the room. We have cc debts and my problem was deciding whether to put up with the item until it sold (for possibly £70/£100....but no interest shown so far, but to be fair...I didn't try very hard to sell it) or donate it to charity (they would uplift immediately).
I donated it. Then had an attack of the guilts because I felt I should have made more of an effort to sell it to help pay our debts.
I'm happy about it this morning though as I realised that clutter really gets us down and the item was causing a problem where it was.
Unless you know you will strive to sell your stuff SOON, then just get rid now. Clutter is surprisingly damaging to your peace of mind.Herman - MP for all!0 -
How are you getting on? I'm finishing the kitchen (apart from 1 drawer) today and going to start on the living room. Again just a couple of 15 bursts with teh timer as I find i get more done against the clock. I'm the world's worst procrastinator and 15 mins I get something done rather than just sitting looking at it.
Thanks for that tip about the heart foundation collections - will call them on Monady to arrange a collection of clothes - that'll give me another deadline to meet.
I'm on the 3rd floor with no lift and a sp of a toddler. The trek down the stairs with my bin bags to the charity shop always gets put off unless I've someone to mind ds while I make a quick trip. Getting stuff collected seems to work for me.
It's gonna takes weeks to do at this rate but at least it's happening iykwim. littles ones are very distracting aren't they:rotfl:0 -
Our green box recycling scheme that picks up same day as bin men, will take clothes and paired shoes. Worth asking if yours does.0

My OH is leaving his job which means that he will be moving in full time and he has a lot of stuff  In fact, he's pretty much taken over 2/3 of all of the storage area we have in the bedroom!
I've started doing a major spring clean because I hate clutter but at the moment I'm only clearing out general stull plus mine and my daughter's. He's promised to start on his when he gets back on Sunday.
Has anybody got any tips? Where do you start, it's completely overwhelming. I want to get rid of clutter THEN do a major clean.
The house is getting totally abused at the moment and is looking very tired. It also never looks clean and tidy, and yet I always seem to be cleaningWe’ve had to remove your signature. Hi Hun!
Maybe start with one room at a time. Use boxes for different things-to keep, to re-cycle, to sell etc etcAnything not used for 6 months...get rid of

in terms of keeping the place tidy and keeping on top of things...have a look at the flylady challenge thread. It has really helped me. The first week is a little overwelming but after then it becomes so much easierWe don't need to do it perfectly - good enough is exactly that GOOD ENOUGH.0

I'm itching to start but can't until we get our entire kitchen renovated/plastered/floored/tiled/installed - whole contents of kitchen are in the dining room and I've got a steady stream of couriers and workmen traipsing mud and plaster through the house. Oh well, I keep telling myself that the end's in sight!"I'm ready for my close-up Mr. DeMille...."0

I've been trying to do that so far but the problem is, the loft is now completely full with stuff to sell at car boots. He keeps stuff for the sake of it and has aquired quite a lot of 'stuff' over the years! lol Then there's my daughter....I've removed at least 5 binbags full of toys and bits out of her room since xmas, that's not counting the stuff I've thrown away or freecycled! I hardly ever buy her toys for this very reason but they still pile up
I get the feeling that I will be like Rikki, still doing it by next spring! We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I agree, one room at a time, also the flylady thread is a godsend for the cleaning routines so you might want to have a look at that. Good Luck0
