PAYG Dial Up Best and Worst

Options
My mother in law has just bought a computer and wants to connect to the internet. She will only use it minimally for online banking etc.

Just wants a reliable and cheap PAYG dial up provider, not interested in broadband or monthly fees.

Have tried searching the forums, but can't find anything really giving clear advice

Any recommendations of good providers are appreciated. Also ones to avoid

The thing about pay-as-you-go dial-up is that it doesn't really need to be reliable. If it doesn't connect, you don't pay anything.* If one dial-up service doesn't work - simply try another one. Keep trying different numbers until you finally hit upon one that works.

    * Actually - it's not quite that simple. If it doesn't connect, you'll probably still pay the call connection fee - but you certainly won't pay as much as you would if you stayed on the line for any length of time. Again - if one dial-up doesn't work, simply use another one.

I disagree - ISP review is now concentrating primarily on unmetered dial-up and broadband, and has now become absolutely hopeless as a source of information on pay-as-you-go dial-up. There's now only one decent listing of pay-as-you-go dialups in the UK - and that's FreebieList.

So my advice is, if you have free calls to geo numbers on your line, then use Coulomb GeoISP. If you don't have free calls to 02 numbers, sign up with 1899, and prefix the Coulomb GeoISP with 1899 - ie, 189902081149845.

Also, sign up for 18185. If you ever find that the Coulomb GeoISP number doesn't work, then try one or more of the 0845 numbers from FreebieList, with a 18185 prefix. This will be 3p per minute 6am-6pm Mon-Fri and 0.5p per minute at all other times.

Most of the dial-ups listed by FreebieList will accept any username and password, and do not require you to sign up - so don't bother using any other ones which do. You may have to amend your mail client settings to send mail, though.

0845 numbers are cheaper than 0844 numbers.
