SKY Line - Broadband Provider Question

I've moved into a property which currently has no phoneline. I used SKY's online shop to way up the best deal and to see how much a phoneline would cost.
It came back and said if I had SKY Talk a new line would be fitted at the cost of just £10.
Now I rang SKY and the agent said that if I have SKY fit a SKY Phone line then I have to take out broadband. I explained I didn't want it and explained the webshop and he said if SKY did that then the only broadband provider that could use the line is SKY.
Surely this isn't right? I mean they rent the kit from BT don't they?

Well, you don't have to have Sky line rental to get Sky broadband.
But it could well be that you can't get other broadbands if you have Sky line rental.
We've got Sky TV+phone+broadband, and I can say I am a happy customer.0 -
Sky have their own optical fibre based network that is independent of BT. it was originally built by Marconi.
Sky kit is installed in BT exchanges. In the event of problems Sky use BT Openreach for local service.
FYI If you take Sky line rental and broadband then you cannot have broadband from another supllier unless you transfer your line back to BT.
This is because Sky uses MSAN (Multiservice Access Node) equipment which provide both voice and data services. That gum you like is coming back in style.0
