    Hi Guys,

Thanks for the feedback.. I have called O2 twice and chosen the option for 'leaving O2'... assumed I was put through to retentions but did not ask for this department specifically. On both occasions they were unable to offer me a better deal than what was freely available to anyone online! I did tell them I was thinking of going SIM only and they offered the bog standard £16.50 deal, again available to anyone online... So much for loyalty :(

I think it's probably a no-brainer... I just need to have the confidence to leave the security of a contract. I have looked at at iPhone4 but decided that seeing as I'm going to need to have it for a while to get my money's worth, it makes sense to get the latest model ie: the 4s rather than the 4. I will go via quidco however sadly the cashback is only 2% not 3% as quoted on MSE.. There's no cashback that I can see on the Tesco SIM only deal. I think I want to stay with the O2 network rather than Vodafone, so will go for this unless anyone's aware of a better SIM-only deal for 500 mins, unlimited text and 500mb data (Tesco is £10.00 or £12.50 micro-sim).

    All advice gratefully received.

The extra £2.50 iPhone SIM - Includes unlimited BT Openzone Wi-Fi access which will help keep your data down and also is 1gb as opposed to 500mb

I've never used BT Openzone... I've looked at the coverage map and there are no hotspots where I live, although there are lots in central London which might be useful. Is it worth the extra £2.50 a month? I was considering paying £12.50 and going for the regular SIM which I would attempt to cut to micro-sim size.. This gives 750 mins, unlimted text and 1GB data (but no BT Openzone). I don't really *need* 750 mins - 500 is more than adequate, so with the extra hassle of trimming the SIM, if BT Openzone is worth using, then I might just go for the £12.50 micro-sim instead.

Depends on your usage , fortunately the last two offices I have been in I can get openzone, though last month I just used data and I totalled 800mb, but well done for doing all your homework, getting the handset sim free and then being able to sell it on when if the ip5 arrives and suits your taste buds is the wiser option as you know you will still be paying £10-12.50 per month.

Re the Microsim required for Iphone4 - apparently if you go with Tesco they can provide a microsim if you ask them or call in store.

I've been with them for 18 months and no issues, shame they don't do call forwarding though.

You only speak to retentions when you request your PAC code

Hi jb66 - I *did* request my PAC code... which is why I assume I was put through to retentions. After being unable to offer me a better deal, the guy from O2 quite happily gave me my PAC code. I wasn't put through to anyone else.

Thanks DUTR and Spannerzone for your input. I have decided to go for the £12.50 Tesco option. I'm sure there's no wrong decision however at least like you say I'm safe in the knowledge that I've done my homework! :)

Best thing to do if you're after a new iPhone or any phone to be honest is have a think about where you friends and family work. Might sound odd but a lot of employers offer very attractive deals for friends and family on phone contracts.

I just found out that a family member can get a lot off a new contract from 3 because they are an NHS worker (and money off for friends and family!).

Have a ring around your pals and see if they can sort you out - I believe the discounts can be 25% - 30%.
