Alternative to Flora? (not butter please)

Just about the only branded item I have continued to buy, whatever my budget, is Flora spread (Original version). Although it didn't taste exactly like butter, it had a very acceptable neutral taste and smell, and I found cheaper spreads quite off-putting. Now Flora is allegedly 'tastier', in the opinion of the manufacturers. The trouble is, it isn't - it's now horrible. I don't know what they've done to it but the smell makes me feel sick and it doesn't taste right either. I'm not going to buy it again.
I know many people are advocates for butter rather than artificial spreads on health grounds, and I accept the case they make as far as it goes, but it doesn't work for me, because if I use butter I not only find it more difficult to spread thinly but am much less inclined to do so, and am tempted to eat more slices of bread or whatever in the first place.
What do other people use?

Personally, I prefer Clover. In my opinion it tastes much better than Flora. I've tried Utterly Butterly but frankly, I thought it was vile!
Also, Lidl have a "spreadable butter" in a silver pot, which tastes like Lurpak Spreadable. I'm afraid I'm not keen though - if I'm having butter, I'll have proper butter!
Good luck with your search though!I wish I was a glow worm, a glow worm's never glum
Cos how can you be gloomy, when the sun shines out your bum?0 -
Years ago I was forced to have Flora because my father had a cholesterol prob and when I was first with OH we bought ASDA sunflower margarine which to me seemed quite similar.
I have President unsalted butter now though which I keep covered in a butter dish in a cool cupboard. It doesn't melt, nor is it rock hard,0 -
Thank you both. I'll give them all a go and see which is most bearable!Life is mainly froth and bubble

I like clover lighter which is quite nice. Lurpak have bought out a lightest version which I've heard good things about.
What about Flora buttery? Thats really nice but maybe too nice!
Try low fat olive spreads, sainsburys & bertollis are nice. They're nice but tlnot too moreish!0 -
I dont buy Flora personally but A prime time Dj on Smooth radio was saying the same thing this morning and said he wont be buying it again after many years - wierd looks like they messed up.Save saynoto0870.com in your favorites, and stop giving companies more £££ dialling 0870 numbers when you can dial freephones or cheaper alternatives.:j0

I buy Flora light as I'm dieting but my teenagers love I can't believe it's not butter.
I think it tastes great too especially on toast0 -
I use Tesco olive spread (at work - still have butter at home!) I find it pretty inoffensive. I'm not sure I would like it on toast though!0

vitalite is nice, quite inoffensive, I used to buy the pure spreads but all of them are either very strongly flavoured or very salty xx0

I'm not keen on Clover, I find it too rich. I tend to purchase either Tesco's, ASDA's or Sainsbury's olive spread, depending who is selling cheapest. Tastes good on toast as well I think. Wasn't too keen on Waitrose's one though surprisingly, didn't like the taste. Never really been that keen on butter either to be honest, not sure if I'd ever go back to it.
Apparently Morrisons olive spread is quite good as well.
Current cheapest is Tesco's £1.95 until 20/03/2012. Never really appears to drop below that price.
I've tried Utterly Butterly which is made with buttermilk. They sometimes buy this at work, it's not too bad. Have also tried it on toast and appears OK. Tesco are currently selling 2 for 1 on 500g packs also until 20/03/2012.0 -
I buy Yeo Valley organic Spreadable, usually around £2.85 though for 500g0
