Broadband cancellation fees

Hi, Just wondering if anyone knows how much companies charge for cancelling broadband services mid-contract?

Currently living in a plce with only a six-month lease, probably will stay for the whole 12 month a broadband conract would take up, but just wondering if I had to pull out early how much that would cost?

Yes they would if you wanted to cancel. You may be able to when move take the broadband (and the remainder of the contract) with you.
Why not go with a broadband provider that will offer you a rolling month contract. We're living in rented and didn't know long we we're going to be here. I'm with Plusnet and they do rolling month contracts.
  • I had a look at Plusneet, but it seems with all the charges the setup would come to about £150 then add on the £25 month for phone and broadband. If those companies who require a 12 month contract charge the remainder of the contract or less on cancelling early it may be cheaper to go that way.

Where did you get the £150 from, do you have a working phone line?

Look at one of the resellers like Xilo or Vivaciti. (Or even the Post Office). With these companies you can get one month contracts. Of course you typically need to pay the setup fees upfront, but you're not then tied into a 12+ month contract.

The reason many ISPs have minimum term contracts is to allow them to offer "free" or reduced-cost setup. But it's not "free", you're just paying it over the term of the contract instead of upfront. Thus if you leave whilst in contract you're typically liable for the remaining cost of the contract. Although in actuality they're only supposed to charge you any outstanding costs they have borne - they're not supposed to claim "loss of profit" from the point of no longer supplying the service. (At least as far as I understand).

    OP

    Cancelling Broadband -

All months line rental remaining + cancellation fee.

If you had a line fitted and your provider who did it was not BT then you may have to re-imburse the cost of this aswell (£150)

I still dont understand why people carry on asking these questions when they could just as easily ring up their provider who can give you a full calculation in less than the time it takes to type out your question and wait for the replies.

    Hi all

Sorry for the newbie question but I'm on my first phone and BT Broadband contract and not sure how this all works.

I'm moving abroad next month unexpectedly due to my work, will I be held to the minimum term - I called BT and they are saying I have to pay up - I'm only three months in :(

Not sure whether to dispute this with BT or not :s

    Cheers

See the reply from Wapow above.
There is nothing to dispute with BT,you agreed an 18 month contract presumably and now wish to break it,you will pay the early termination charges detailed here:http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProducts/dynamicmodules/pagecontentfooter/pageContentFooterPopup.jsp?pagecontentfooter_popupid=26746&s_cid=con_FURL_termcharges plus a £30 broadband disconnection fee.
Also if you plan to return to UK and same property you will need to pay for the line to be reactivated as well as a new broadband activation fee.
  • Thanks, I figured this would be the case and I'm just going to have to pay it - it's slightly unfortunate since if I'd known about the move I wouldn't have taken the bt broadband contract - it's not their fault either I suppose and a deal is a deal
