Can my processor be upgraded?

Hi,

I purchased a Lenovo Desktop PC 3000 J105 (type 8259). I was just wondering if the processor could be upgraded and if so would it make any difference to the sempron 3400+ chip that I have at the moment?This is link to my original computer specs(Click here). And these are the current specs as I have upgraded my pc recently;

AMD Sempron 3400+
Vista Home Premium
2GB(2x 1Gb) PC-3200 400MHz DDR memory
Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Xtreme Music OEM Soundcard
Leadtek WinFast AGP 7600 GT 256MB DDR3 AGP
48x32x48x CD-RW drive
240gb(1sata 80gb and 2x80gb ide drives)
external 250gb hard drive(USB 2.0)

Thanks

A move to an Athlon might show a difference (you'd need socket 754). I'm an Intel man myself so I don't know if it's worth the upgrade, but I doubt it will be worth the money.
  • This link gives good benchmark comparisons between your exisiting Sempron 3400+ and an Athlon 64 3200+ (best cpu your mobo supports). I tend to agree with Crox; I don't think it's worth the money.

well you should be able to use Ahtlon 64 processors with your board according to that link. However looking around on a few sites there don't seem to be many Athlon 64 socket 754 processors available nowadays so you may be forced to buy second hand.

PCnextday have this but I've no idea whether it would be any faster in reality

    http://www.pcnextday.co.uk/products/ProductDetail.asp?ProductCode=1111-3308

    Quite a few on ebay

    http://computers.search.ebay.co.uk/754_Athlon-64_W0QQcatrefZC6QQcoactionZcompareQQcoentrypageZsearchQQcopagenumZ1QQfgtpZQQfposZDY97LGQQfromZR2QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQftrtZ1QQftrvZ1QQga10244Z10425QQlopgZQQsacatZ80139QQsadisZ200QQsaprchiZQQsaprcloZQQsargnZQ2d1QQsaslcZ3QQsbrftogZ1QQsofocusZbs

some of which are faster than your current cpu, and being a 'better' processor as well ought to show some improvement.

I think you ought to do some serious goolgling first though to see if ti is worthwhile upgrading.

You might also want to google overclocking your processor (making it run faster than it's [STRIKE]designed [/STRIKE] specced to run at)

    Found this on Tom's hardware

    "Socket 754
Socket 754 is only upgradable upto Athlon 64 3700+ (2.4 GHz, 1 MB L2 cache). If you already own an Athlon 64 3000+ or faster system, then you shouldn't consider buying a new CPU without upgrading the motherboard. If you have a low end Sempron, then you can get some performance boost from an Athlon 64 3400+ or 3700+ (the 2.4 GHz 3400+ has 512 KB L2 cache, performance difference with 3700+ is negligible"

Thanks for all your help guys, I am trying to upgrade my PC without changing the motherboard. I just want to get the best out of the mobo I have already. I will be using the PC for gaming and so have upgraded the ram and graphics card.

Do the specs look ok, to handle such games as Fear,Call of duty 3 etc?

    Thanks again

I concur with the others: save your money.

We all know how fast computers become obsolete: even if you did waste, oups, spend the money into a new CPU, it will indeed help running the half dozen games in the next few months before it starts lacking for the next batch.
To be honest, your laptop has very decent specs. As it stands, I'm sure it will run most (if not all) games, and if it doesn't run smooth enough, you can just crank down few details like filtering and shadows. It will have very little impact on your game experience anyway.

Since you have a laptop, I'd say that your top requirement would be to run games at monitor's native resolution since it's a LCD and they don't tend to interpolate resolutions nicely at all.

Besides, for the price of a good upgrade (including CPU+GFX card), you can probably get yourself, say, a Xbox 360.

These are just my 2 cents, but at the end of the day it's your money.

For the reasons stated above, I never buy top notch PC hardware myself, I always buy stuff within the range of products before the price starts increasing exponentially with performance.
