Am interested to know if I'm in the minority here. Have started a poll.Sammie_UK1 wrote: »Yes, I would turn it down as I AM NOT HOMELESS!! If another HOMELESS family could live there instead of me, of course I would give it up for THEIR families sake!!
There are still some DECENT people living in this world who aren't all about what they can get for themselves at someone elses expense!!

The thing is to be offered a council house you have to apply for it . Most people would never consider applying if they owned a property.
You don't get far on a council waiting list if you made yourself intentionally homeless...........maybe the same consideration should be given to those that made themselves intentionally overcrowded:o
This.
The system may well be at fault, but unfortunately that seems to be the case in a lot of systems/laws. It's the fact that people even think to take advantage of the "loopholes" that really astounds me!
It would simply never occur to me, as a homeowner, to apply for a council house!? If I felt that I needed more space, I would consider it my responsibility to get it.
Similarly, if, like the OP; I owned a 2 bedroomed house with one child and a step-child to consider at weekends, a partner in the construction industry during a recession, and an aversion to kids sharing bedrooms; I would have the gumption to recognise that now wasn't an ideal time to get pregnant.0 -
How the heck do you get a council house if you already own a house? If women are birds and freedom is flight are trapped women Dodos?0

I am not sure how this helps...is it to give you one less person in the current property or so you can attempt to claim you are single to get more in benefits?
If they split up I don't see why he'd have to move in with his parents- he could stay in the house they own and claim the mortgage interest?52% tight0 -
Where i live there is choice based lettings. Maybe you could contact them and see if a HA or council would buy or rent your house out (the one u own) as affordable housing? I know in somerset there are so many on the council waiting list, they are buying them to re-let, cheaply. that way you have sold the house (prob at a loss, but beggers/choosers etc ) and kinda helped the social housing sector???? maybe worth looking into xxxThe feeling i got when i confirmed my place studying criminology at Exeter Uni was brilliant!!!!!
The pride my children told me they had in me was even better!!!!! # setting positive example to children is OUTSTANDING!!!! !:grouphug::grouphug::smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea0 -
I wish you would all stop having a go at the OP for having a council house and owning a home. Its perfectly legal to be in that position. She came on here for help and advice, not to be chastised like a child for discussing her circumstances. Her circumstances are no one's business but her and her families and as I know its perfectly legal to be in the situation she is in, then I see not why you are all making such an issue of this. Its not for her to worry about every Tom, !!!!!! and Harry in the country who is on a council waiting list, geez! you all expect everyone to be so holier than thou, are you all really so holier than thou? I doubt it. In an ideal world everyone would put everyone else before them, but human nature is not like that, it never has been and it never will be. I however, feel fair in standing up for someone who is being attacked unfairly. It really is none of your business why she has a council house and owns a home, nor is it up to you all to preach what she should do to her .... its her life.0

Zero sympathy and no advice but to give up the council house to someone who deserves it/
What rubbish! She deserves it just as much as anyone else, as much as all the single parents who have them, all the immigrants who are given them and all the asylum seekers who are given them. She should NOT give up the council house - its secure, affordable and suitable in size for her family. Her family deserve that house as much as anyone.0 -
