I wonder if anyone else has come across this Ryanair money-spinning scam? Checking in recently for a flight from Eindhoven to Barcelona (actually ... Gerona) I had to pay for a name change because the name on my passport was different from the one on my reservation. Booking on-line I put my forename as Rob; on my passport it says Robert. That cost me 100 euros. Ryanair's emailed condescending reply to my letter of complaint (you have to write to Dublin Airport) said they were sorry I hadn't understood their terms and conditions. Whichever way you look at it Mr. O'Leary is taking the Micky ... or Michael.

    Regards,
    Rob(ert) Atkey

Similar thing happened to me last year at Leeds / Bradford flying to Amsterdam. I was aware that my name was wrong, so got to the airport in good time. Went to the sales desk, explained the problem and the response was "no problem sir, I will change it now on my computer. Oh no sir there is no charge for that"

It does really seem to be how the staff are feeling at the time.

I'm really surprised by this, I booked a flight with them for January at time of booking my daughter was not born and therefore I was unable to give her name as requested, just booked her in as baby + my surname. We had no problems at all with the fact that her name was not 'baby'. had fantastic trip at total cost of flights £25 for 4 of us :-) saying that was slightly confused as paid 2p each for flights except for my daughter whos charges were per norm for babies!

I have no sympathy for somebody who, by their own admission, booked a flight where the name on the booking did not match the name on their passport.

It may be good ammunition when complainign to Ryanair about excessive charges for changing a name on a booking!

All the low cost airlines will charge for a name change. When I queried this I was told that Travel Agents would buy up the cheap flights and sell them on if there was no fee. I know its pretty rotten if there's a genuine reason but if the Low cost airlines can't make money somewhere there wouldn't be any Low Cost airlines if you see what I mean and we'd be back to paying the full whack for all flights. I know it can be annoying but I and I'm sure a lot of other people would not be as well travelled but for the likes of Ryanair.

i booked flights with ryanair in january and accidentally put my sisters in her maiden name (she has only been married a few months...still getting used to it!!) i called ryanair to change her name and it only cost me 7 to change it but a few weeks later we found out my niece was 5 motnhs pregnant and would not be able to come so one of my sisters friends was going to take the place and her name change would have been 70, more than the cost of the tickets.
it's all a moot point now anyway as i had to cancel my holiday as the !!!!ers cancelled my flight on the way home

    Off topic, but...

do you know if there's a limit on the number of passengers Ryanair allow to purchase the 'priority boarding pass'? I flew to Dublin last night, and the number of passengers with this priority boarding pass was about two thirds of the all the passengers on my flight! I understand that £3 (or whatever) may be a small price to pay to spend less time in a queue to board a Ryanair flight, but when/if it comes to the stage where everybody on the flight buys this priority pass, well, there will be no priority, just loads of free money for Ryanair.

No, there is no limit. Remember that all online check in customers have priority boarding also, so hardly a money making ploy?

Why can people not read terms and conditions? This site is about being consumer savvy, not moaning because you can't take responsibility for your own actions.

Around five years back i too got charged £50 for a name change thou Ryan Air. (I was booking tickets for friends and put the wrong surname down! I was chatting at the time and not concentrating as I should.) It was my own fault! I wasn't happy to pay the charge but tbh it was no one else's fault but my own, Its true their customer service is non existent but you have to remember what you are paying for!

It taught me a valuable lesson, check and check again before clicking any buttons, read up on the T&C they are not hard to understand I think we are so used to others making our decisions for us we don't like to take responsibility.

You can pay a travel agent to do it for you but that costs! When we buy things at such low rates we need to realise what downsides it entails. Such as plane delays and such, there will be no comeback, that is why you need good insurance. Someone once said on here that Ryanair is a bus with wings! I thought that as a great allegory! Don't expect too much, read the t&c and think for yourself, you will be okay. If you want more, pay more. I know that some of the flights can be expensive but no one is forcing anyone to buy those, its supply and demand!

Just think back 6/7 years a flight return to Dublin for £75.00 was considered a great bargain now we would grumble about being ripped off!

Sometimes just sometimes you do get away with it! I'd booked my parents free flights with Ryan Air and put my Dad's name as his middle one as thats what he has been known by all his life but thats not on his passport! They let him checkin with a warning! Talking of my parents, they have visited Rome, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Barcelona for the grand total of £2:08p!

If the cost was similar I would book with another airline, only because they would probably offer better protection but to be truthful the other budget airlines do not offer the same prices and choice as Ryanair.
But if ever I stray from the path I follow
Take me down to the English Channel
Throw me in where the water is shallow And then drag me on back to shore!
'Cos love is free and life is cheap As long as I've got me a place to sleep
Clothes on my back and some food to eat I can't ask for anything more
