Yup, I can see router on both laptop and mobile. I looked for manual on buffalo website today and could not find it - even under the disused models! I've jsut got the quick set up guide that came with router.

I;ve already opened the router online. the wireless settings has the same details for my router that have always been there. But I'm not quite sure what you wanted me to check there?
No nor could I but I found it elsewhere , which channel is the router set for , and does it have wpa and a psk set for it. It may be worthwhile using either the lappy or phone in close proximity , just to remove interference from other routers in the neighbourhood. found the manual here http://www.ccsleeds.co.uk/kb/routers/wireless_adsl_router_wbmr-g54_manual.pdf
Edited to remove original link and put ccsleeds one

Router is set for channel 11; no wpa, just wep. I'm not sure what a psk is, so don't know how to check that.
I've got both laptop and mobile right by router while trying to connect (normally they'll connect when I'm elsewhere in the house, but best connection is always the nearer the better),

Thanks very much for manual link - i will download and browse it now.

Hi I have been following this post - may I suggest the following link for the router?
    http://www.ccsleeds.co.uk/kb/routers/wireless_adsl_router_wbmr-g54_manual.pdf

The other link given previously may get involved with the Babylon add-on which can be a pain to get rid of (apologies DCM but I did try it!).

Using the URL 192.168.1.1 on yr desktop's browser and the access user name & password (unless subsequently changed) of - admin & admin - you gain access to the router GUI.

The second tab on the left is the wireless tab which allows you to change the channel, and set the security - I would think that 11 should be okay - you could change the SSID name if you wished.....

Unless yr laptop is very old - I would suggest you try configuring it for WAP (stronger than WEP anyway), using any alphanumeric PSK string (password)

Remember to Apply changes - then to use yr laptop to search for your wireless network SSID and try reconnecting with your new password. If this doesn't work I would suggest trying another router?

Well I seem to be getting nowhere fast. I've tried to reset up my laptop connection and it can't detect the hardware. And my mobile can still find lots of other networks, but not this one
The manual isn't helping me either
So.....I think the time has come to get a new router.....

Any recommendations for a good, easy to use/set up/understand router for a reasonable (under £80)?
    I;m wondering about either

Zyxel NBG4615 Wireless N Gigabit NetUSB router or

    TP-Link TL-WR1043ND Ultimate Wireless N Gigabit Router

Thanks again for all suggestions to date

Have you tried powering down the router for a couple of minutes? Apologies if you have but it it's not clear from your posts and you will not have to re-enter any settings.

I found this specifically regarding yr Buffalo router, and thought it might be worth a try (changing the channel to 1)
Buffalo WBMR-G54 ADSL 2+ Wireless Router

Setup manually which was ok except the unit needs a "Save & Restart" after every change. e.g. change its IP address, then reboot, change its DHCP subnet range, reboot etc. Power down without a "Save & Restart" and it looses the settings.

Biggest issue on our unit was a wireless fault. It worked fine on channel 1, never worked above channel 6 and seemed intermittent on 2..6. Choosing channels was a requirement so this has been submitted for return.

Lots of features but UI is cumbersome and help is poor. Avoid unless technical.

If still no good, I installed the Netgear DGN2200 n300 recently - very good wireless coverage and simple to set up.

Can I just ask who your internet provider is?

It is just that, in my experience, most internet providers nowadays provide wireless routers, either free or at a low cost. The advantage is that they are configured to your network and are pretty much plug and play.

When my O2 wireless router packed up, the techie went through a quick diagnostic with me, and then sent a replacement out free of charge.

Just wondering if that might be the way to go?
