did they explicitly say that you could transfer the entire amount at 6.9%, or just that you could transfer it?
  • perhaps your right..but if i get nowhere by friday i'm transfering out and reporting to the fsa..any judge would clearly say they are purposely misleading...hey i'm selling a car but i forgot to say it breaks down every 2 miles..!

You were not mislead, you just made a mistake.
  • i agree but i don't do mistakes and i don't giveaway money to these people, when i phone up why do they insist that i paid in 2 cheques when i only paid in one?..i clearly am not 100% wrong

how can one decifer such small differences which i think are generally

    made to mislead the public...

easy, you decipher by reading the terms and conditions

"Standard rate credit card cheques will be charged as cash withdrawals (details shown below)"
  • did you write the cheque out for the whole amount and then they are charging you the different rates for the 2 parts?

if so, that seems silly, and after your phone-call, misleading.

i had a similar problem with incorrect info during a phone-call from another provider (actually it was on outright lie).

once you get your reply, you should have the phone no on it of someone you can ring. ask them if they recorded your phone call.

ask them to change the interest back on the higher part - if they will not then tell them that you will contact the ombudsman.
  • exactly right sazzacat, in fact i have just opened a card up with hsbc
for 0% so if barclaycard decide to go against me i will be transfering away
from them this week..it's such a waste of time and at the end of the day
just leaves a bad taste in my mouth for barclaycard. They old me one thing
on the phone and cually did another to my account...but today i decided
just to finish with this account and move it to something else, and contact the ombudsmen.- basicly if a bank provides you with a cheque yo can use it anywhere...but to do a balance transfer without one you can only do it
    to another credit card.

and to reply to danjberry...not i cannot decipher what wasn't written on
paper so perhaps you should decipher your own integrity!

The Ombudsman will not even look at your complaint until you have exhausted all the financial institutions complaints procedures.

If these are the same cheques that I received from Barclaycard a few weeks ago then they say the following:

"Simply use the cheques attached to transfer one or two balances from your outstanding credit or store cards.

    0% interest until August 2007 - a 2.5% fee applies
    or
6.9% interest until paid off - no fee applies

    Things you need to know:

The maximum amount for each cheque is £5000 subject to the credit available to you. Any amounts over £5000 or transfers made after 01/03/07 will be charged at your cash rate
    ".

So you need to argue with them that they misled you on the telephone. Maybe they have a recording of the call that the complaints department can listen to?
