If you have a Co$tco card, the C*ndia skimmed long-life milk is now even better value than the MrT's value milk - same price but even nicer milk :) I was brought up on UHT so always have a few (*cough*) bottles in store.

kittikins - we dont have a card but we do get 10% off at M's as DS works there:) I cant stand the longlife stuff. We also get quite a bit of normal milk for free as DH is a milkman and we are allowed to have some cartons that are almost at their sell by date. I freeze it and its fine - it always annoys me when they just throw stuff in the skip because they aren't allowed to sell it.

  • G'day all, yesterday had a house full Son, his partner, daughter who lives with us, grandson(6months) hubby and myself. Raided chest freezer and had a sort of buffet for tea. £1 buffet food from A*d* that I had'nt used at chritmas everyone seemed to enjoy it. Off work this week and waiting to see if they keep our store open ( sign of the times I suppose) so will definately not be spending today. On plus side I have my dgs today, walk along the beach or visit to the park for us ( weather a bit grey ) thank goodnes he's to young to ask for icecream. Off now to sort some magical concoctions from my kitchen for tea. Wonder if I could give my hair a trim, desperate for one.

    morning everyone -
just wanted to share something we found out. DH likes to have long life milk in his drinks(not keen on it myself)
We found that the vaue skimmed longlife is as good as the semi skimmed longlife that is twice the price:money: so we'll be buying that from now on - its nothing like the watery skimmed milk you can buy.

I quite agree and have been using value skimmed milk for many years, its longlife without that funnny taste which means that you can always have some in stock and its thicker than the fresh skimmed milk.

Today is NSd number 5. I had thought about going to Lidl's tomorrow to get the cellophane but have been put off by some shops having sold out - I will just get tempted anyway.

Lunch today was a portion of pasta bake that I had frozen - tea was the remains of the chicken casserole from Wednesday.

Hi Chums back onto the Fiscal fast tomorrow for a week I have got all my shopping in, and have more than enough fruit and veg and still have almost half of my £100.00 food purse money so I want to be really frugal this coming week as I am saving my extra pennies for my spring break at the end of April. So a week of NSD looks on the cards for this coming week. I lashed out £17.96 on books for my grandchildren today O.K. so I know its not food, but I have taken it from my food purse to save dipping into my bank account.I had two £5.00 money off vouchers for W.H.Smiths and got 6 books valued in total at £38.00 so I think its was money saving of a sort they work out at around £3.00 each and have gone into my Christmas stash of pressies
Good luck everyone,no more spending for me for at least the next 7 days
  • Evening all, and hi nannygladys, come and enjoy the fun. Everyone sounds as though they are doing really well.

Had a minor falling off the wagon today - £5 for coffee for DD and me - next week will be last one of these, and £2.89 for DDs birthday card and 3 new toothbrushes! Apart from newspaper tomorrow, next 4 days should be NSDs.

Good tips on HM crisps and long life milk, thanks peeps.
Am definitely seeing a difference in the bank balance, and not feeling deprived.

Right, got to go and rinse me mung beans - seem to rermember I used to do something else on a Friday night - what was it now?

    Keep on frugalling everyone.

Hello chums well a good sort out of my stores is the order of the day today.
catznine I don't see why dried milk shouldn't work with blancemange. I use a large tin of evaporated milk that I dilute in a jug with water and it gives me around a pint and three quarters of milk for pudding which at 52p a tin means I get almost two pints of pudding i.e. custard or blancemange or if I really want to push the boat out I make a huge 2 pint rice pud that's gorgeous, and lasts for several days.
I have also found that if I buy a large pot of natural yoghurt I can 'pot' up into smaller portions some yoghurt with chopped up fruit A couple of weeks ago I was in Asd*s and they were doing a promotion for pancake mix( how easy is it to make pancakes why buy a bottle of the mix its only egg, flour and mik) and it was a dollop of natural yoghurt,a bit of chopped up pineapple, a torn up piece of pancake and a squirt of honey on top It was delicious.I came home and made a few small pancakes that when cooled down I froze between sheets of clingfilm.Last night for pudding I had some nat yoghurt, some berries from the freezer from last summer, one of the small pancakes defrosted and torn to small bite-sized pieces and a squirt of honey over it,all mixed up together (a bit like Eton Mess) it was delicious and made a nice change for a pudding, and so easy to do.

I get my stash of pots from my DDs house as her boys go through yoghurts quite a bit so I always have at least a dozen spare in the cupboard.A large pot of natural yoghurt costs under a pound, and I use it for puddings, or even in scrambled eggs instead of milk, in fact almost anything I can think of .When I see folk buying those muller lite yoghurts by the tray at £3.50 plus I think for a little forsight you counld make your own with fresh fruit mixed in and even the chocolate sprinkles if you needed them. A third of the price and you get to choose what your own flavour is.I like chopped banana, or pineapple with a dash of dessicated coconut very tropical, and cheap as chips .
I have been copying and pasting some of the recipes on here into a folder and called it 'Fiscal Fasting Food' and keep in on my microsoft word programme so keep them coming as its great to see what other things folks are doing to streeeetch their pennies
    Cheers chums

    morning!

JackieO - you have a wealth of useful ideas so thankyou for sharing them - simple things that make me think why on earth I dont do them all anyway:D

As I said I've started making the jellies in yoghurt pots. DH and DS love those Muller corners with sprinkles (only ever buy them on bogof though)so will have a think about what to give them to put in them - good idea about the coconut as DH loves coconut:T

I've a portion of mash left so will freeze that for another day - am trying not to waste stuff. I've also got some past their best pears so might make a pear crumble or something to use them up.

Hoping for a nsd today as I'm off to work later.

Have a great day all x
