Putting leaflets through doors of houses you are interested in?

Has anyone posted leaflets through the door of houses they are interested in and got a positive reaction?

We are thinking of doing it (not through an estate agent, just off our own back) to some houses in the village we want to move to.

Thanks

Fab, that is the reaction I was hoping I would get as well:rotfl:

My only concern is if we put a leaflet through the door of a house and the house is valued at more than we can pay and we waste their time.

  • Someone put just such a note through our door last summer! It was very polite and well written, and certainly we would have made contact IF we were thinking of selling.

    Ok, 2nd question.

I was planning on doing the note directly and not through an estate agent. Would this make a difference to whether or not you would contact us? Do people prefer to use someone like an estate agent?

just write, "we are looking for a house in your road, if you are thinking of selling in the near future please contact me on MOBILE NUMBER".

Its expected that you won't know the asking price etc. we established those sort of details by text before we spoke.

  • Ours was from a 'private' individual and his family - I'd rather have dealt directly with him than any estate agent!

  • I'll be interested to see if your approach works Red... I am thinking of doing the same with houses in the area I'm interested in.

My parents sold in 2002 and did it through word-of-mouth: and after selling through EAs last year they said that they'd much rather sell privately - less stress and hassle!

I don't like the EA notes though, I often think: "but you get enough money already and I can see which agent's doing well and selling the houses around me, thankyouverymuch" :D

Silvercar/Norma - I'd be interested to know how the notes that you received were worded. Were they typed or handwritten? I think I'd handwrite them (but my handwriting is fairly tidy) as it creates a more personal effect.

I will let you know as we could well be doing it within a month or so. I just want to finish off some of the major jobs on our current house so it is ready to go on the market immediately.

  • Mine was handwritten and was quite specific to our house. Can't remember the exact wording but it complimented us on the house, its position, it was just what they were looking for, and if we ever decided to sell, to please give them 'first refusal' etc. etc. Sorry I can't be more specific, I binned the note as we'd only lived here 18 months or so! :D

  • I've just realised Red that you are in MK (I'm so slow - we discussed Solicitors not long ago!) perhaps it's more common practice around our way!

MK Property Sales do it all the time around where I'm looking to move to (MK13 - but only the nicer parts!), which is why I'm cautious about it as most people will think "oh no, not another leaflet" and just bin it.

Norma thank you for the details - even though you didn't want or need to move at the time the note obviously was decent enough to make you think "had I wanted to move, I would've contacted them" :)
