  • Last year I made my MIL a box and in the box I put a hand made book, a hand made card, and loads of questions. This was done really cheaply and she thoroughly appreciated it as it made her go back down memory lane and think of times gone by. The book was there for her to stick in the questions and then write the answer, so for her children/grandchildren it would hopefully reveal some of her past when she was smaller.
When you were born, you were crying and everyone around was smiling. Live your life so at the end, you're the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying! :rotfl:

  • How about a wicker basket filled with tissue paper and toiletry bargains from Tesco or Boots? I've got loads free or nearly free with the H&B and Quit Smoking vouchers. You could also put in a bath scrunchie thing, loofah and waffle mit as sold by Tesco in their £1 bogof items (now reduced to 10p if you can find any left).

Unfortunately I lost my mum a few weeks ago and the funeral is on Monday :(

And I also just remembered a verse I knew, sometime in the 70's as I recall... it used to be everywhere, on plaques, china plates, all sorts...

    Mum

To one who bears the sweetest name
Who adds a lustre to the same
Who shares my joys, who cheers when sad
The greatest friend I ever had
Long life to her, for there's no other
Can take the place of my dear mother

I remember that. I bought my mum a brown plate with flowers on in the 70's and that was written on it. I am getting old.

I am hosting a family party for my Mum and I am encoraging my siblings not to buy things for Mum, I am currently decluttering so we can decorate for her and she has so much already LOL. I have only done half of one room in about 12 hours so far, I am going to suggest they offer some time with a paint brush instead.

  • You could do something traditional like bake a Simnel cake.

Most people associate it with Easter but it is really a Mothering Sunday cake.

Sometime during the 17th century Mothering Sunday became the festival of human motherhood when the whole family met together and apprentices and servants were given the day off – probably the only holiday in the year – and took flowers gathered from the hedgerows and, sometimes the gift of a simnel cake to their mothers from their employers.

  • hi
ive ordered my mum a personalised keepsake candle from https://www.candle-delight.co.uk. they make personalised candles from £30 and it has a pic of me and mum on the front and a poem on the back. it is a hollow candle and you place a tealight inside the candle and it illuminates the outer shell a bit like a light box. so you keep it forever. ive ordered something similar for my boyfirend on valentines day and he loved it. check it out.

Love all the ideas but when is Mothering Sunday?
I know it's in March some time and so many weeks before Easter.
Is it before we spring forward with the clocks or after?
Different thread but why do we still have British Summer clock thing?
