This year my mum is getting a hamper with some sanctuary bath stuff in (with the boots voucher) so that she can have a relaxing soak, and also because she never treats herself to anything im putting a paid voucer in for a cut and blowdry. I know that whatever i give her she will be happy with. She is so special and looks after my two boys during the holidays. :A
My mil is a lovely lady but has got everything you can possibly imagine. so ive put a lot of thought into her pressie and im going to get her a years subscription to gardeners world mag (paid for by either nectar points or tescos) and lots of gardening stuff seeds etc. :j0 -

I have been hesitating where to put this post as it would apply to most special occasions, but Mothering Sunday (;) sorry, couldn't resist - fellow pedant here) is as good a reason as any...
My OH and I often use vouchers for services and treats, orginally not due to financial reasons but more due to illness or not knowing what to buy. Now we do it to save money. Let me give an example to explain.
A couple of years ago, I was in the middle of a 3-week virus when it was my birthday. Rather than go out for a meal while poorly, my OH made a voucher book for me; 12 vouchers, 4no of 3 types, and each type had 4 choices on it. The were arranged so that one voucher would have 'a meal out' or 'a takeway' or 'a massage' (my OH is trained to do them and knows how much I like them) or even just 'a foot massage'. Another voucher might include 'a day out eg to the seaside' or 'a picnic'. The point being, you can choose things that don't have to cost money, or you can choose something to buy for the person when they want it. eg a perfume when they see one they like.
In the case of a Mum, I imagine giving them time back for themselves is important, so perhaps the vouchers could be for 'a hour's babysitting' (for them, not BY them I might add). a 'tea party' held in their honour; Chef and waitress service for the night, where you cook a meal for them and wait on them hand and foot.
There are all sorts of ideas, depending on what is important to the person. That is why this idea works for all sorts of occasions. I can try to think of more if anyone is interested...?
My lovely lovely OH has now expanded this to be his Advent treat. We have those calendars that have pockets for you to put a treat or a choccie in... he puts suprise tokens in an odd few days for a little present - we are often at his family's house for Christmas rather than hosting it ourselves, so it is our own little routine which makes Christmas special for us. In fact, doesn't cost any more money because we allocate a stocking filler present we would have given for Christmas anyway!0 -
And I also just remembered a verse I knew, sometime in the 70's as I recall... it used to be everywhere, on plaques, china plates, all sorts...
Mum
To one who bears the sweetest name
Who adds a lustre to the same
Who shares my joys, who cheers when sad
The greatest friend I ever had
Long life to her, for there's no other
Can take the place of my dear mother

Sounds a bit !!!!! but I liked to call it MSE, but I'm making a hamper for my mum out of the packaging we had from a cheeseboard at xmas! It's a nice sturdy black wooden box with a clear sliding lid and i'll take out the straw and put in pink crate paper. I'm filling it with all the free sampled I've requested over the last couple of months and some of the "quick grab it while you can" bargains I've picked up like makeup and girly CD's!Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 092

Hi - my suggestions are -
Going to a ceramic cafe like 'all fired up' and paint a plate/mug/ etc
If you have some special photos of perhaps you and your mum, you could have the photos made into something like a coaster set for example...'A real friend is the one who walks in,
when the rest of the world walks out.’Author of Quote - W. Winchell (1897-1972)0 -
this is prob no use to anyone but my mummy is getting a hand stiched (by me) 'mom' card (yes yes it was the only nice one i could find though) and a box of all of the inpector morse books... i brought both off ebay the earlier for £2.50 and the latter £5.00 (£10 with p&p) i brought the books in january and the card in febuary which has just arrived so i have started stiching... both bargains but trying to cut down on spendings... but i am also taking her on holiday and paying for 80% of the outings so i think above is enough
*postings mum is the best in the world btw*
