Why are 9-11 year olds "expected" to have skills that are equal or better than 49% of adults? Which 9-11 year olds?

It's like arguing with a brick wall.

(I wonder how many will get this reference?)
I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.

Like all religions, the Faith of the Invisible Pink Unicorns is based upon both logic and faith. We have faith that they are pink; we logically know that they are invisible because we can't see them.

No, sorry, Mandelbrot is already our winner.

How can schools allow someone to leave without being able to do basic compound interest calculations? Even if you can't cope with powers, you can just use repeated multiplication!
parents are to blame here - lack of discipline - removal of the cane - throwing board rubbers (actually wooden blocks) - kids today and yesterday think they rule - and now we see the consequences - one of them may be an ifa now looking after your future finances!

Pity - thought "Another brick in the Wall" was very apt to the thread.

Definitely was apt, those kids above did not need our education. But Mandlebrot was spot on really, and Gadget likes to have the final say. :D

Indeed. While I'm not a supporter of corporal punishment, I believe we've gone too far the other way, and now we're seeing the consequences.

There is a general belief amongst some children and in some cases entire schools of children, that the respect of the teacher has to be earnt, which takes time - a year in many cases, during which learning time is lost. This view is supported by the ethos of the school, which is the fault of the school's management.

Some children just do not respect any adults, so trying to teach them anything they're not directly interested in becomes impossible, and this often includes maths/numeracy/financial management.
