    Some are 24/7

    Some are night time only

    Some are day time only.

All of them, if they have SPECS cameras, have the cameras on, and a reduced speed limit, 24/7. Even the ones where they don't have narrow lanes or anything.

Is it too much to drive at 50 for a few miles?

Depends on how many other people are around. Driving through SPECSs zones when it's crowded is incredibly stressful

Do you remember the ones on the M1 from a few years back? The ones that were 20 miles long, only had workers around during the daytime. Just what you want to encounter on your way home to south wales having spent the last 10 hours doing on-site work in Hull.

In any case, I was addressing the "they're there to protect the workforce" comment.

I agree that it is annoying, when you dutifully crawl through roadworks and don't see anyone working. Or even standing around.

But, there can be times, when no-one will be around. A friend, who worked for the Highways Agency, gave me this example scenario. The team that put out the traffic cones go along, dropping them off from the back of their lorry. When they finish, someone checks that this has been done properly and the work site is properly protected. Then, and only then, are the workforce allowed to enter the work site.

If you drive past during this time, what will you see? Cones. No workforce.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)

I've encountered plenty of those. That situation mainly applies to short term roadworks though.

The other one that bugs me is when they do roadworks in rolling half mile chunks, but because the paperwork is so long winded and expensive they just request a temporary 50 limit for the entire 4 mile stretch.

    I know what you mean.

That's a minute longer on the entire journey, and what's the chances of making that up again?

Change down a gear or two and do it at a lower speed!

They used these cameras when they refurbed the Hatfield tunnel (A1M) and they made hundreds of thousands in fines bearing in mind its less than 1/2 mile long.

Yes, 'they' should take into account your personal circumstances when carrying out roadworks.

Not just mine, but everyone else's too. Is it really that hard to bag the signs and turn the cameras off at the end of a shift if you're doing daytime only roadworks. IIRC they need to do an inspection of the site at the start and end of every shift anyway so it could just be added to that procedure.

This is one thing that I'm hoping will actually be fixed as HADECS becomes more commonplace.
