lpg or oil

We have just purchased a rural property without any heating system. There is no mains gas. Cooking was done with a bottle of gas and hot water with an immersion heater, there is an open fireplace but I would rather have a heating source more instant, so we need to install boiler and tank. Can anyone advise on our best cost effective options.

On running cost alone, oil. Your only other options are biomass or all-electric.

This question comes up a fair bit on the forums.

In summary I'd avoid LPG like the plague and go with oil if renewable options are not feasible.

The most economical would be neither oil or LPG.Go with either a air or ground source heat pump, a correctly selected/sized unit will cost about 1/3 to run compared to LPG.
You will however need larger radiators, but as you are starting from scratch anyway that shouldn't be a problem.
You will also need to insulate your home as much as possible (new windows, loft insulation etc...)
  • Yeah, cost efective is indeed neither....

Renewables is the way to go so perhaps add it to the mort but pay much reduced utility bills?

But in the end very much depends on your personal circumstances and expectations...

At this point of time I would discount a new oil installation as prices will only continue to climb because of rising demand and tensions in the middle east.
LPG - seems to be uncompetitve at the moment, plenty of posts on the forum about unfair practices by LPG firms to keep prices up, but longer term may be better than oil as Shale gas may bring prices down.

Personally I would seriously look at either solid fuel or an air source heat pump instead. Solid fuel will be cheapest, especially if you are willing to collect and chop wood yourself locally, but if you want convenience get a heat pump.
