OP when they started talking about taking you down to Halfords to pick up the bits, thats when they started putting you on the long road to pishtake. A common theme it appears from certain national chains who string things out so long, theres always a change in the story, a fork in the road, conflicting advice from HQ, etc., etc., you end up settling for less just to get it resolved.
Go back in, calmly tell them you want the car fixed by tomorrow afternoon or they can read their names in the local press.
This was their mistake, stuff happens, but they should have taken it on the chin and not caused themselves even more grief.

Really sorry to hear of your case. Avoid having MOTs done on the cheap as some garages probably recoup the money inventing problems that don't exist.
absolutely not, the mots are cheap to bring in customers and the resulting work for the gearge side of the business. any way if you feel that way then be present when the test is carried out most testers will show you what failed and why

if you sell wet fish for a living and a bloke in greasy overalls puts a pry bar under a bush and gets it to move as proof its a fail how would a person not knowledgeable know any different?
    clue
    he wouldn't
its called trust which is why as i keep saying vosa removed reason for failure of discs corrosion as a cash cow for them so now they are going to have to find new ways of robbing the unsuspecting

Taking the OP to Halfords seems quite a reasonable idea as they are replacing aftermarket alloys and cd player etc.

YOULL BE SUPRISED they stock many types of alloy wheels, the small outlet near me has stock on ford vw vx renault peugeot and skoda in 4 different styles with many more on option if ordered they come in on a next day order by 1pm basis.

the larger supertype stores have a vast majourity on the stocks sheets. including most ICE.
  • TBH id be tempted to get a mate dressed up in a suite, a decent looking camera, a note pad and go in have a mock up photo shoot done, and a mini interview, when the garage owner look on in aw and comes over asking whats happening you can intrduce you mate as xyz from a national newpaper, then your mate take his roll on, asking the garage how it happened, why have they been treeting you so poorly, what is head offices response to this situation etc etc. then the garage may make you an offer of say look tell (your mate ) to go away we'll sort it out then you can say if you dont itlle be all over national papers like a rash, naming this garage directly and the garage owner.
