I was declined for a play.com credit card.

I applied for the play.com credit card through MBNA and was declined I find this very odd as I have another card that they run the amazon.co.uk mastercard.
So I was wandering is there a phone number I can contact them on so I can find out exactly why they refused me when I have another card from them already there was no number on the decision letter.

Some providers won't allow you to have two credit cards with them. As you already have an Amazon credit card then they might have declined you for that reason alone.
If they do allow you to have two then maybe something was wrong with your credit report? Have you looked.
MBNA's General Enquiries number is:
0800 062062Money: Current Account: £85.24 | Cash ISA: £5300.00 | Online Saver: £2700.00* | Total Cash: £8085.24

And nothing has to be "wrong" with the credit report as such, maybe they just didn't feel they could take the risk lending you more money on top of the money you already have - possibly in relation to your income. You may as well try but I don't think they'd ever tell you exactly why they rejected you.0

I don't know their current policy but in the past MBNA have been happy for a customer to have more than one of their cards. They have been willing to reduce the credit limit on one card to increase the limit on another, keeping the total the same across the cards.
The OP could try offering to accept a lower limit on the original card in exchange for being provided with an additional one.Are you for real? - Glass Half Empty??

Thanks guys I'll ring them on Monday and even if they don't give me the exact reason all I want is a general idea as to what the issue was and the taking a lower limit does not sound like a bad idea either I'll certainly remember that when I call them.
I have not checked my credit report yet but will do later today what kind of things could be sending off alarm bell that I should look for(seeing as how a positive credit score is meaningless) last time I checked my report was fine no issues at all.0 -
If you have not had the amazon.co.uk mastercard for very long that could be a reason for a decline.0

Just called MBNA and it appears they are being picky about the combo of cards they allow you to have as they said it is because I have the amazon card that the play.com card got declined and even offering to reduce my amazon card limit was not good enough for them basically they said the only way I can get there play.com card is to close the Amazon card which I am not going to do but oh well.
Just thought I would update everyone so if anyone is thinking of getting of one of these cards to make sure they pick the right one as both is not a option..0 -
MBNA don't seem to be one of those, I used to have 3 different cards through them at one time.traynor1987 wrote: »Some providers won't allow you to have two credit cards with them.0 -

Well they said it was not their current policy so they have obviously changed how they do things even though it does not really make anyone more risky based on having two certain cards instead of another two but if they want to believe that I am not going to stop them0 -

MBNA used to do that
Consider yourself lucky that they did not review your account and close it as reported herethenudeone wrote: »I had 3 MBNA cards (Virgin, play.com, Amazon) with a total of £5k unused available credit; £500 of that on a Virgin card. All payments on all credit lines are up to date with no missed or late payments.
Three weeks ago MBNA offered me various 0% deals on all 3 cards but the best was on the Virgin card (0% BT 13 mths, 2.9% fee).
I asked for a limit increase to use the offer, but following a "review", MBNA closed the Virgin account completely and removed all but a small amount of unused limit from the other two cards!
My overall current borrowings are about half my salary and I have given MBNA bank statements showing that I could pay the whole lot out of the balance of my Fixed rate ISA (earning 4%), but they are adamant in refusing to re-instate my limits!
In the past MBNA have happily moved available credit between cards but now I suspect that they will take any opportunity to reduce limits - BEWARE.
Obviously, they are no longer interested in lending to me because there is no chance that they will ever charge me interest once the 0% deals end. They are no better than drug dealers offering your first fix for free!I agree - WATCH OUT for MBNA or BANK of AMERICA run credit cards. I had 2 charity credit cards with MBNA and last week when buying some books on Amazon my checkout showed a £10.00 discount if I applied for their credit card.
I did this but the £10.00 discount then disappeared from my shopping basket - you have to wait till the application is approved and then use the credit card. So misleading to have had it included in the first place in the checkout as if it would apply to the current transaction.
Worse to come ........
Letters from MBNA arrive saying I have "asked for a review of my credit" by applying for a new card with the Bank of America group. In order to give the max credit limit to the new card they have reduced my existing cards limits by a total of £9000.00 and then eventually when the new card arrives it only has £2500.00. Not much of a deal.
As you say any oppertunity to reduce limits. I bet Bank America even funds the £10 Amazon discount just so they get the oppertunity to "review" peoples credit limit. I have always paid in full each month so I bet they don't like people like us who dont earn them interest.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Yikes well I have had nothing but good experience with the amazon card so it looks as though having just the one card and being out of sight out of mind of MBNA is a good thing.
How they get away with messing people around like the two above is beyond me.0
