Advice needed calling an o2 mobile USA from UK (& vice versa)

My hubby is going to the states from 5th-13th March.
He is on o2 mobile (I'm on giffgaff)

We rang o2 but there is no bolt on for him to call me on either mobile or landline just standard 90p a minute rate, they advised him to buy a local sim over in the states and use that when calling home,

I'm trying to find out if there is a cheaper way of calling him rather then through talktalk but there are so many companies out there offering cheap calls I don't know if they are all genuine and don't want to run up a massive bill (we decided it would prob be cheaper for him to prank house phone and me to call him back)

He would probably be ringing for about 5mins every day.

Can anyone advise on the best way to get the cheapest calls all round please.

Thanks in advance.

they advised him to buy a local sim over in the states and use that when calling home,
T-Mobile USA are currently selling SIM cards for $2 with $3.34 of inclusive credit. He'd need to pay $1/day to avoid incoming call charges, or $2 or $3 per day if he wants data as well. There are several smartphone apps that would give you free calls to his US number from the UK.

Personally, I'd avoid the PSTN for international calls between family members. Use VOIP instead, e.g. Skype or Viber.

If Your husband buys one of the Local SIM in US and then you can use localphone, and can call him .5p (half pence/min) from your landline or mobile.
