Skype is software that allows you to make free calls across the internet.
You can read all about it on their site
You can do various things from basic Instant Messages (like typing messages to each other in real time), making free 'phone' calls to other computer users of Skype, making free video calls & sharing files.
There are other features which you can use if you want to pay but that is personal choice & it isn't necessary.
You only need a webcam if you want people to see you. You can still see them via their webcam if they have one & want you to see.
Depending on the privacy settings you use you can confine Skype to only allowing people in your contact list to contact you.
It's, obviously, more involved than just the few things mentioned here but I hope it gives you an idea of what it's about.0 -

Skype has nothing to do with Sky, it works with any internet service provider, even Virgin!
All thats needed is a cheap headset / microphone, most laptops have these built in along with a camera. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Sky and Skype are completely seperate things. Like Tesco and WHSmith. Or BT and Jeremy Paxman.
Skype can be used on mobiles, computers, even some Smart TVs and games consoles. It can do text chat, voice calls, or video calls.
It's (for the most part), free.0
