JSA and Holiday

Hi all,

Last year I booked and paid for this years holiday abroad. In the mean time, this year I find myself made redundant, and claiming Job Seekers Allowance for the first time.

I'm due to take my holiday abroad soon, is it possible to freeze or pause my JSA payments whilst I'm abroad, or do I have to sign off for the duration of the holiday ( 1 week ), and go through the pain and sign back on again when I return?

Thanks in advance,
Sidders.

You need to sign off and do a rapid reclaim when you come back, its not the same as a new sign-on.

I am in a similar situation. I booked my holiday to the U.S.A last July. Fully paid up and saved up in advance (Me and the Girlfriend have been planning and saving for three years!!!). We are due to leave in May for two weeks and one day.
I was made redundant three weeks ago due to the company I worked for being liquidated. Worked there 6 years. No redundancy payment, notice or anything.
First time I have ever been out of work in my life.
Luckily I have been paying my P.P.I for my mortgage for the last five years and have found out that i will be receiving the first payment next month.
I am now worried that if i go away on my holiday then I will have to stop my JSA which in turn will stop my P.P.I claim. I am not bothered for claiming the JSA while i am out of work but I have to to gain my P.P.I.
Will I lose both my JSA and PPI by going on this once in a lifetime holiday? Any help will be greatly appriciated.

Somethign else to think about - I had a 3 days (!!!) booked, over Xmas (when everything was closed anyway and obviously nobody recruiting), not only I had to sign off for those 3 day but later on doing rapid reclaim was easy anough BUT the new claim kicked in so all was counted from the day I signed back on so lost "continuaity" to 6 months.

Because of that, I was few days short when I started a job, few days short of 6 months to get 4 weeks HB and CT "run on", lost big time there.

    HB= Housing benefit
CTB run on= when in receipt of a means tested benefit such as Income Support/Income Based Jobseekers Allowance for 26 weeks or more you are entitled to a 4 week run on of both Housing Benefit and Council Tax benefit if getting gainful employment for 5 weeks or more.
Forums can be/are a good guide to entitlement and it is good practice to back it up with clarification from the relevant department/specialist with written confirmation to safeguard yourself.

    As Allen said above so...

Say you are claiming for 4 months then sign off for 2 week holiday - your 4 months previous claim will NOT count towards the 26 weeks you need to be claiming to get HB and CT 4 weeks "run on" if you/when you get a job. Clock starts ticking from zero from the date of your rapid reclaim.

Oh ok thankyou. I am on contibutions based JSA for the first six months and that is all I am claiming at the minute.
Hopefully I will recieve some pay in lieu of notice from the insolvency service soon and this will suspend my PPI claim whilst I am away anyway so the JSA sign off for two weeks away hopefully will not affect it.
As I say the only reason I am claiming JSA is because I have to, to enable me to claim my mortgage PPI.
I was just worried coming off JSA for two weeks would affect my PPI claim.
  • Hi Phathanded,

I am in exactly the same position as you and was just wondering if you managed to find out any more information on how the insurance companies react to signing off for 2 weeks?

    thanks
