if you factory reset, open Computer, open C: drive. Do you have a folder in there called Windows.old ?? If you do, that should be a copy of your previous installation and if you browse through that to the folder you had them stored previously, you should find your pics :)

Thanks for trying to help :)

There is a folder called 'Windows' and a file (it's not a picture of a folder beside it but more looks like a sheet of paper) called MOVE_RECOVERY. I have looked in both (in fact I have looked in everything that was there was I opened the drive) and there is nothing called Windows.old.

This is so frustrating as you all probably know what you are looking for but me with my 'limited' knowledge *cough* of how to try and sort these things out means I am stumbling about!!!

All advice gratefully received and tried I promise!!

EDIT to add...there is also a folder called BACKUP but no joy there either

Huh, I thought factory reset was just what it said on the tin, surely I am wrong :D The factory reset didn't know what happened x years later , mind you I am working on it :(

Edited: if Sparkle had done an install/re-install then yes there would have been a windows.old....

hmmm....it seems to be manufacturer-dependant then...did my vista lapy over xmas (advent) and it retained the .old file, but I seem to recall using the recovery disk (that I burned off the first time I switched the lappy on ;) )...haven't tried it purely from the recovery partition, maybe it would not populate the .old file if I did.

    ....noted for future reference :)
