A nice lady from Nationwide Complaints Dept phoned me tonight and apologized for the hassle caused.

They will "of course" send out a letter detailing my account balances, together with the statements - all without charge.

The nice lady was extremely thankful that I bought this to their attention as it gave them an opportunity to look into their practices as part of their ongoing commitment to improving customer satisfaction.

I told her she was welcome, that I only charge £20 for my advice and it was a pity I had to complain in the first place.

Yes this is why I never cancelled paper statements, due to one day wanting them and for ID reasons. Lots of organisations still want recent bank statements. Its a cheek from the banks. All they are after is saving a bob at the expense of your needs.

How can they even tell you printed it yourself? They look 100% the same as a paper statement sent by Nationwide through the post, except for the "Duplicate" watermark that surely nobody in their right mind would object to?

They don't look the same because they will be blank on the back. Original, posted statements have information on the back i.e. explaining codes on the statements, or giving numbers to ring for queries etc. That's why you can always check if it's an internet statement or not, even without a watermark, -just turn it over and see if there's anything on the back.

But that would not be a "proper" statement, mine are watermarked "This is an online document". It seems perverse that the financial institutions push for paperless accounts then those same institutions insist on seeing "real" statements for proof of income or ID.

Personally I just photoshop out the watermark if I need it to look like an original statement... it's certainly good enough if I'm faxing it or sending a photocopy.

Because 99% of them get binned or shredded shortly afterwards. So it's a total waste of resource. Other than for use as 'ID' - which most people do not need - you should check your accounts more frequently than is possible with paper. And if you do that online - what purpose does storing paper achieve. Because you're not going to even look at it when it does arrive.

My sister doesn't have online access to her current account. And drives me nuts when I send her money, as she has to go to an ATM to confirm receipt. Totally stupid - and probably doesn't check the 'paper' properly when it does arrive. As it's all 'in the past'.

On the one occasion in 10 years I've needed to provide ID (because they hadn't implemented electronic) .... it had to be certified. And a Bank statement wasn't acceptable.Nor would I have shown that to the certifier - for confidentiality reasons.

The comment about it being 'silly' - was more related to the pique shown by the OP in the 'of course' statement.
