Ok showing my complete naievty here - sorry!!
I've been gifted a desktop computer and want to put this is my sons bedroom, however he has no telephone point in his room.
He's going to need internet access so is it possible to buy 'something' that plugs into the desktop so he can get wi-fi internet access from my homehub (in a bedroom next to his but plugged in to my desktop).
Thanks in advance if anyone can point me in the right direction.

Is the home hub a wireless router? if so- this is how I get internet to my laptop - you need a USB dongle

Probably the easiest thing to buy is a USB wireless dongle like this - many to chose from from any supplier, Amazon, ebay etc.

Buy a pair of homeplugs, more reliable than wireless, if you do want to make the desktop wireless then you'll need a USB dongle.
Examples:

Penrhyn - this homeplugs look good - can you get a better signal with them - my wireless is a bit iffy in certain part of the house eg here. in the sitting room0

They use your mains wiring as a means of transmission. There should be no signal strength issues. That gum you like is coming back in style.0

You get a constant connection eg stable, i use them for my xbox and they're fine, i use them as the wireless signal strength varies.0 -

Homeplugs work very well especially if you want to reach distant parts of the house. However as the OP just wants to reach the next room, its probably a little over the top price-wise - after all this is moneysaving.
PS I use homeplugs so am in favour where there is a good case.0 -
As usual, why not go for the simplest solution - an Ethernet cable between your router and your son's bedroom. Needs a bit of DIY but it won't break down, needs no software and has a great bandwidth. Also the connection can't be hacked and you need no security. Just plug in at each end.
You will probably have got a short (2m) Ethernet cable with your router, required for the initial set-up. So you can try it before committing to a longer lead.
Must be at least Cat5. Widely available from Maplin, Amazon or any computer shop. Ebay examples here.
