Just wondering if anyone could recommend a repairer who does free / reasonable estimates?
DD's lappy has died, OH has looked at it but can't find an obvious problem.
Thanks

You need to give us more information.
In the header you say it's an Apple but not which model. Is it a MacBook, MacBook Pro, MackBook Air?
How old is it. is it an older PowerPC model or a newer Intel?
When you say it's died. In what way? Does anything at all happen when you power it up or nothing at all?
We need more info, as much as you can give us.
I had a friend who's Toshiba laptop 'died' last year, it turned out there was nothing wrong with it other than the battery had gone flat and the charger was faulty! One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -

you could take it into an apple store and see what they say. if its not covered under warranty - they will give you a quote and tell you whats wrong with it. from that, you could perhaps do it yourself if its nothing to major.0 -
I will have a look Masonn and report back! It's a Mac Book about 3-4 years old I think. OH is quite technical, but more of a PC man, so I assume he has ruled out battery. May have been dropped..
I understand Apple want £150 to do an estimate? :eek:0 -

OK, well it powers up, but there is no screen. Yes, it does have a removeable battery pack. She bought it in 2008.
Thanks x0 -

Powers up and no screen normally means motherboard failure which costs hundreds to repair!
The only otehr thing it could be is the screen/GPU (graphics)
Plug a normal computer monitor into your laptop and turn it on, see if you get any image on the external monitor.
If you get an image Its the screen.
If you get nothing mobo/gpu0 -

It could be something as simple as a dislodged connector on the screen.
Your MacBook has a mini Display Port on the side so it can be connected to an external monitor.
If possible you should try this and see what happens, if it works then the either the cable has come unplugged or the display itself is broken.
If you don't have access to another monitor or the correct cable take it to a local computer store and ask them to if you can try it there, it takes moments and if they're decent people they won't charge for such a trivial thing. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0
