Broken apple lap top

It could be something as simple as a dislodged connector on the screen.
This isn't a £250 laptop from Tesco. They don't do that. And in fact I don't know any laptop that has ever done that.If you don't have access to another monitor or the correct cable take it to a local computer store and ask them to if you can try it there, it takes moments and if they're decent people they won't charge for such a trivial thing.0 -

I don't know any "local" computer shops that carry the Apple Minidisplay Port cables.
Then let me set you straight.
I and my wife both have MacBook Pro Laptops, hers developed a fault with the screen, for a while any black on the screen would occasionally go red, you could 'fix' it by moving the scree/lid slightly one way or the other.
Eventually the screen stopped working all together.
I made an appointment to see a 'genius' at our nearest Apple shop and they fixed it there and then. It was the ribbon cable from the motherboard to the screen, it had come loose then detached altogether.
If you need convincing go on to YouTube and search for MacBook screen problem, there are pages of them.
I bought my Mini display port adapter from my local PC World

or the Mini displayport to DVI adapter

Of course I have no idea what things are like where you live but as well as PC World I have two smaller Computer shops that are less than 20 minutes from me that sell these cables. One is the Apple re-seller I bought my iMac from. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -
OK, well it powers up, but there is no screen. Yes, it does have a removeable battery pack. She bought it in 2008.
Thanks x
This rang a distant bell at the back of my mind so I've been doing a bit of searching and there was a possible issue with 2008 MacBooks.
The graphics chip was an NVIDEA unit and there were problems with them failing either partially or completely. Some people experience distorted images and others, like you, lose the display altogether.
Have a look at this.

Give Apple a call, if this is the problem they are repairing it for free even though the laptops are out of warranty. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -
Thank you for taking the time. Will check it out and report back!0

Very good. I was on about repair shops actually having them to use for repairs, not shops selling them.0 -
This problem occurred on my 2006 Macbook. It will either be the inverter board (cheap, but not the easiest to replace unless you have know how) or the graphics chip (might as well sell it on ebay cos it needs a new motherboard).
Can you see a faint image on the screen? Try holding a bright light near it and squint about. If you can see something on the screen it is most likely the inverter, and a local shop with Apple experience should be able to fix it for about £50.0
