I've used Wwoof before when staying in Switzerland. I ended up paying for cheap easyjet flights to Geneva and then a train fare to Sierre. Was there for 3 weeks and despite working it was an amazing get-away. It gives u time to have a holiday but at the same time actually REALLY see the culture of the people there because u live it with them! Also, very, very CHEAP!

will happily Wwoof again!

Also another site which offers a great way to stay free worldwide, meet local people etc is http://www.couchsurfing.com - you can offer to host people too, or be hosted but there is also an option just to meet for coffee or a beer, which is a nice way to find a friendly face when your are alone in a new city.
It's a non-profit organisation and like Help Exchange, it's free to join.
