Samsung Galaxy Y

Thinking of buying a Samsung Galaxy Y on Pay as you go with Carphonewarehouse around £89.

Want to surf the net with my wifi at home, once I have set up the wifi settings on the phone, how does the phone recognise that I can now use free wifi without being charged ???

Never had an android phone before, but don't want to incur extra costs whilst pay as you go.

thx

Amanda

It has to remember the router and to to connect to it instead of mobile internet as soon as it becomes available.

so if you key in wifi network password within the phone it should always remember to connect to wifi router and I shouldn't be charged?

Yes, just keep an eye on the wifi symbol in the notification bar. Sometimes my phone fails to reconnect to my office wifi, especially after switching off/on. Also, if the phone loses connection with wifi, like a computer does sometimes, it automatically reconnects to the mobile internet unless you disable it in settings.

In Android, you can press the "menu" key -> settings -> wireless & network settings -> mobile networks -> data enabled
If you untick the checkbox your phone won't attempt to connect to the internet when wifi isn't present.

The downside of this is that your phone is fairly hamstrung without mobile data - for example, many paid games and apps won't operate unless they can authorise your purchase with the Android Market, every time you use them.

I would consider getting a 3 or giffgaff (runs on o2s network) SIM, and buying using a PAYG plan that provides free (unlimited) internet access.

You can download apps to put on the desktop which with one click toggle wifi on and off, or toggle 3G on and off.

Rather than buy the Galaxy Y, why not go for the slightly better Galaxy Ace for free on a £12-a-month 24 month contract with TalkMobile (£35.35 Topcashback too: https://www.topcashback.co.uk/talkmobile/). You get 200 minutes, 200 texts and a whopping 1GB of data with that so then you wouldn't need to worry about how much you use 3G (so long as you don't go crazy with downloads/streaming).
  • Galaxy Y was launched in October 2011. It is the cheapest smartphone available in the Galaxy series to-date. There is a specific reason behind the name of this handset i.e. 'Y' symbolizes 'Young'. The name clearly indicates that it is meant for the young generation.

I am now speculating what the "W" stands for on the Galaxy W. Surely not for Merchant Bankers? :rotfl:

I have to disappoint you. Apparently "W" stands for "wonder".
