Skype to BB messaging

I am planning to send my 13yo autistic son, for a summer holiday with his grandfather in Italy, and I am thinking od the best ways to keep communication costs down, and already have skype set up on all PCs. Is there a program that allows skype to instant message blackberry devices? I know that iphones and ipods are compatible, but I am not sure BB is.
It's amazing at the level of planning involved.
Your assistance is ever appreciated.

Why bother with skype to send texts if normal texts don't cost anything to receive abroad? Your main concern has to be about sending texts from Italy.

That's right. That was my main concern. At least he could message me and advise me he would be online for a video call. And if he needed to message me while at work or away from my laptop, I could message him from my BB

You've got a couple of options.

- http://www.imo.im does an app that logs you into the various chat services including Skype from your mobile, including BlackBerries, for text only chats
- Google chat allows text chats when logged into Google accounts.

No voice options sadly with the BlackBerry and these services
