Need to replace a lost car key!

I have just come back from walking my dog, only to realise my bunch of keys (including car key) had fallen out my pocket :(
After calling my boyfriend to let me in the house I have started to do some research about replacing my lost key. I do have another key for my car but want to always have two for these very circumstances.
Anyway, Volkswagen have quoted me £250, and afer ringing Timpsons, they said they could do it for the bargain price of £160!!! I understand this is due to the immobiliser chip in the key that most car models require now, but is this really how much this service should be costing me!?
Can anyone offer me any advice on alternative routes to get a replacement key. I live in the Telford area of the West Midlands if anyone knows of any companies nearby.
Thanks! x

Have you retraced you steps to actually look for the lost keys, if its a bunch it shouldnt be too hard to spot.

Also call in or ring the police station. Personally if I found a bunch of keys that's where I would take them cause I know how much car keys are to replace.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

I'd be far more likely to turn round and retrace my steps to find the keys !!

Your house key and car key just kicking about the countryside would worry me alot. What if you have lost them nearby, and someone picks them up and tries them in doors & cars in the surrounding streets (the car key presumably has the VW logo on it, giving a clue to the house/car they might fit).

In your shoes I'd ring the nearest police station and report your keys lost, in case an honest person hands them in.

Then call your insurers, to see if they'll contribute towards new locks for the house & car if the keys don't turn up.
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)

Just a tip - i would ring the police or pop in every day for a week because the chances of them calling you to say something has been handed in is very slim (I am married to a copper before people start slagging me off!) I know my husbands police station are so understaffed that they have been told not to call back and wait for phone calls themselves

    hth and good luck!

Yep I walked the whole route again with a friend to find them but they were no where to be seen. Which made me think they could have been handed in- so yes have called police lost property too and have given them a full description. And yes I am concerned about my keys being lost and people trying house and car- but not entirely sure what I can really do about that.
Thanks for advice on calling police station frequently though, I shall do that. But have come to conclusion they are most likely gone- so any advice on key replacement would be appreciated.

my timpsons wanted £140 to do a key for me, a high street cobbler, who also does keys offered the same service for £45 , same key type . they only copy your other key chip, its not rocket science !
please shop around and dont be fobbed off with timpsons idea of "ooh its a special key "
my own key was worn out and to keep costs even further down ive bought a blank key from ebay [ £5.49, includes blipper buttons ] i will simply transfer the chip out of the worn key into the blank key and the above cobbler will recut it for me for a fiver [ it was him actually suggested the idea to keep costs down as he gets this a lot ] but to finish, please, shop around, and dont loose that spare key youve got or it will be very exspensive !

Thanks Lee, thats much appreciated. Im certain there must be a cheaper way of doing it, it's just finding the people who know how to do it. I will be guarding the remaining key with my life! I could kick myself for losing the other one, and still hope someone will find them in and hand them in for me. But chances of that are slim to none!

Did you have a Clubcard key fob or similar on it? I have handed in a couple of sets of keys to Tescos if they have a key fob on them, they will post them back to you.

Do you have any sort of cover from your bank (e.g. with CPP) as some people have premium current accounts or card protection policies which generally cover the cost of replacement keys. Worth checking, just in case.

I'll check that thank you, as I do have an account with those sort of benefits. Will look into it.
