Old Style Shopping list

Options
I think I'm pretty frugal but writing my shopping list the other day I realised that some of the stuff I consider essential now I hadnt even heard of 30 or 40 years ago.

Examples are:

Clothes conditioner
hair conditioner
kitchen roll
shower gel
antiseptic gel
moist wipes

on the other hand I wouldnt have hesitated to pop a bottle of gin in my basket.

Any other things you can think of that we managed without quite happily?:D

It's funny to think that these 'essentials' aren't really essential, they are just what we think we need.

Me and DH were watching a programme about a typical family in.... can't remember the country now :o Anyway, there was all sitting on a rug on the floor, eating out one big pot of food, scooping it into their own bowl, no 3 piece suite, no tv, no fancy flooring or wallpaper. 8 or 9 of them in a house, sharing the floor to sleep on, no complaints, no moaning, no housing benefits or job seekers allowance. They were just a typical happy family, getting along with their neighbours.

I'm not suggesting we all throw out our furniture! But it just shows what really is 'essential' :)

I still shop the old fashioned way, kitchen roll & shower gel are the only 2 things I buy from the list.

  • Interesting question.

    Gravy granules
Instant custard sachets (so much cheaper than the real stuff).

    Think that's it really.
    Put the kettle on. ;)

Hmmm, 40 years ago I was still at school and the 'posh' art teachers used to bring in red peppers for us to draw, we didn't have a clue what they were. Garlic was a thing to be feared!! I buy both weekly now. I often pick up stuff and think "what would grandma have thought of this?" bottled water would have had her gobsmacked!!

Anything with the label 'recycled', 'organic' or 'free range', because most items were very massed produced, and huge amounts of artificial fertilisers used.

I watched a programme last night about how kitchens have changed in the last century. Was so funny watching people talk about how having a fridge was so unusual, people used to have parties and serve food out the fridge :rotfl:

One woman was talking about serving foreign food like spaghetti bolognese :rotfl:

What did Britain eat before we had pasta?!?

Cling film, and who had a microwave oven then? In the 70s I was working for an oil company, and one section was researching what effect microwaves had on various materials! I remember a large explosion. :(

Like DianneB I was still at school 30/40 years ago. But Olive Oil was something you bought from the chemist, heated it on a spoon and poured into your ear for the earache :rotfl:.

Tinned Tomatoes , would you believe I didn't taste Spag Bol until I was about 20.
