That makes sense - you have to go through Neutral between D and R.

Yes, but only park will hold the car. In neutral you'd still have to be on the brakes, or at least that's how I seem to remember it from the last time I drove an auto (2007)..

I drive an Auto. The gear order on mine is

    P
    R
    N
    D
    1
    2

If i'm stopped for more than a few seconds I stick it to N and put the handbrake on. Contrary to what the previous poster said most Autos I've driven do not require you to be on the brakes to shift from N to D, use of the brakes is required to shift out of P. The ordering of the gears also means theres no flash of reverse lights when using N. Most modern Autos don't need to be shifted out of D for a short stop at lights but most owners manuals will advise shifting to N if you expect to be stopped for a prolonged period.
  • Why would anyone have a problem with people being polite, or taking the time to say thanks?

I don't - you're missing the point. I have a problem with using something that means "there's a hazard ahead on this motorway/dual carriageway" or "I'm obstructing traffic" and changing it to mean "cheers, mate".

It's like everyone suddenly deciding that a long blast on the horn now also means "thanks", or that a quick flash of your reversing light means "I'm about to park" or something.

If you were that grateful you'd make the effort and lower your window to wave out of so you can be seen.

I'm the traffic will love you when your sat there winding the window down to wave "thanks".

Far easier and safer to use the hazards than to f**k about winding windows down and waving, when really you should be keeping your hands on the wheel as much as possible, especially as your inevitably performing a manoeuvre that involves using the steering wheel and gearstick at the same time..... My hazards are conveniently placed right next to my index finger when in first gear ;)

I guess you could wave so they see you through the rear window, but what if that's covered in frost? or the other vehicle is a 44tonne truck and the driver cannot see inside your car? or they think your giving them the bird?

The hazards are one single universal approach that works every single time, in all circumstances.
I'd happily do the left-right-left indication, but as mentioned above, some cars do have soft touch indicators.

It makes me chuckle to see Strider preaching about driving when the videos he posts on YouTube show that his own driving leaves a lot to be desired.:D

    f**k about winding windows down

Is your vehicle a model T Ford?!
One momentary touch on a button and my window winds itself down using this newfangled electricity stuff.

Mine are high enough up on the dash to require leaning forward. And why is your gear relevant - you do manouvre using two hands on the wheel, right? Right?

Then you shouldn't even be driving - pull over and clear your windscreen. Does the Model T have rear window heaters? I can't recall off-hand.

So you keep saying, but everyone who posts video's on YT get's the same sort of comment's....... Cyclists get run over, they get abuse from drivers for doing nothing wrong. Gorgeous young women get called "ugly tramps".. So excuse me if I don't take a blind bit of notice.
And I do get 100's of comments sent by YT users for me to review and a shocking number of them are not even driving related, just simply abusive tripe.

What isn't being considered is that I'm driving a car with a cheap camera fitted, nobody can judge distance or speed through a wide angle lens.
Until you have one of these yourself, you cannot judge.

What you don't like is me picking holes in someone's moronic driving, because you think that im saying im perfect... But at no point do I ever make this claim. I don't even claim to be better than anyone else, but I do claim to know a f**king moron when I see one.

What a load of codswollop. Of course you can judge from what is seen on the videos you post. You post them asking people to judge on what has been recorded. It's a two way street, so don't talk nonsense by saying you can't judge your driving but you expect people to comment on what you perceive as poor driving by others.

You only have to look at the way you comment about driving matters that you consider yourself a cut above the rest. Your comments speak for themselves. So to say you don't claim you are better is nonsense. Luckily, most of the MSE members also recognise a "f**king moron" when they see one:D

  • Interestingly, I'd always been a believer of handbrake on, gear in neutral, at traffic lights. That's the way I was taught in the 60's.

However, when I took my driving test in New York in 1970, I was told by the examiner not to do that. "Just leave it in drive and keep your foot on the brake until the lights change" he told me.

And that's the way I've always driven since then. I always have an automatic and it is much the easiest way.
