o2 upgrade

Yesterday I phone o2, as my contract is coming to an end next month, and I wanted to see what they would offer me to stay. By the end of the phone call he offered me;
iPhone 4S
800 Minutes
Unlimited weekends
Unlimited texts
20 Picture messages
500mb data/free wifi

For £37 p/m on a 24 month contract . . . which I don't think is actually to bad.

From the sound of things this is not a bad deal. Zero hassle approach.

Are you sure they said 800minutes as the £37pm tariff ordinarily gives 600mins.

I guess it's a decent deal, if you plan on using all of the allowances?
Minimum £888 over the minimum term seems quite a lot if you're not using the allowances, when you compare it with buying the phone outright and using a sim-only contract - or PAYG even.
I guess you need to try to think how happy you're going to feel paying £37 a month in 12 months time (with still 12 months ahead of you), for a phone that is probably going to be superceded by the next model within the next 6-8 months?
    Food for thought...

Well actually £888 is probably not the minimum over the term. After 8 months you can drop down one package, then the next month another etc etc. I have done this during my 24month package with O2 and reduced to £22pm (from ~£35) which is the lowest it will allow me to go.

Will you be guaranteed the ability to be able to downgrade though?
I think most other networks have already stopped this, specifically to avoid people getting expensive phones on relatively expensive tariffs - then reducing their commitment after a period of time, meaning the network recoups a lot less than they had (probably) budgeted for.

Well as far as I know. It wasnt 'offered' to me, I just logged on to my O2 and saw that I could downgrade after 8 months with no implications (i.e it does not restart a min contract period etc). I think it is mentioned in the T's and C's and assume these are standard.

It's a lot better deal if you can downgrade - but I don't think I personally would want to take out an expensive contract based on the potential of downgrading at a future point. Maybe I'm just over-cautious though ;)

Well Like I said, I think its in the standard T's and C's so it could be checked before anything is signed up to.

However I agree, I would not sign up with the intenion to downgrade if i did not know if I could.

This is incorrect. The latest development was that you could downgrade one step only once in the second half of the min term. However, I am not sure if even this is still allowed in new contracts.

Fair enough. I stand corrected. I will keep an eye out when I upgrade!

I just upgraded with O2. (they have the only network that works at my house)

£37 a month for a 12 month contract and an shiney new i-phone 4s. I did pay £165 for the phone up front. But 12 months is better in a way as i-phones only have a 12 month warantee if I am not mistaken?

The i-phone is amazing and I am sure in 12 months I will want the next one out...
