Returning a locked Ipod to its rightful owner

Hi guys,
Don't know how to go about this so thought I would ask here! OH has just come in from work and he has found an IPod Touch at the end of our road which has obviously been dropped as the screen is all bashed. I have tried to access it but there is a pincode blocking it and I don't want to lock the device by trying to guess it. The only clue i have as to the owner is their picture display on the screen and I don't recognise them. How can i go about getting this back to its owner?
Might be an impossible task but would like to try as I know I would be gutted to lose something like that

If you have an Ipod lead /itunes, could you try plugging it in and syncing it? You might get copies of their files, I'm thinking the device name or names of photos stored on it might help you? No idea if that would work.
ETA you might be able to get at the serial number that way, and then maybe Apple might help if they signed up for a warranty?0 -
Let the police know where it was found in case the owner has reported it lost.
Notice up in the nearest shop/s, bus stops and lampposts. You can let anyone who claims it ring the phone to check it's theirs!!They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.0 -

Well if its all bashed in, I'd be considerably less gutted at losing it!!!
Agree with handing it in at the police0 -

You could get the serial number, but you would have to force the ipod into recovery mode so all the data would be lost including any address books on there.
I think Police is probably the best way to go.0 -

In terms of the owner proving it is theirs, just ask them to enter the pin. A note on a lamppost where it was found would probably do the trick if the police station is out of your way.0 -
If you have their picture and a Facebook account you could put it on your fb and ask if any local friends know who it is0
