Watch out if you sell your car to one of those dodgy "scrappers" that phone up Gumtree ads etc. Usually it will be safer to fill the V5 in as if you were selling it in a private sale. E.g. giving the "scrapper" the green bit and you posting the rest off to DVLA.

Just used scrapmycar.com nice guy called Colin who helped me thru the whole process.

They were the highest paid out there & though other cars sites recommended here said they would price match any other site they would not!!.

In the end, they were very professional, emailing me thru the whole process. Car was picked up 8am £150 paid, DVLA form signed.

The scrap form was sent via email & hard copy in the post.

All in all for a lazy person like me, this was easy peasy!

B4 anyone asks, i have no connection with them at all!
No one said it was gonna be easy!

    Here is some insider secrets....

Before I was enlightened I would have thought £70 for scrapping a car was reasonable. How very wrong I was.

Every scrappy will automatically drain the fuel (they tell you its impossible and dangerous - all lies!) so that’s £20 at least. Then they cut of a special bit off the exhaust that has expensive metals in them, which is usually recycled at £60-£100 then they spend a few hours taking of a few engine bits worth listing for sale, then the scrap the remaining metal - usually £120 per tonne.

So already that’s at least £450, all for a few hours work, all from one car.

As a few people above mentioned. STAY CLEAR OF GUMTREE ADS! 99% of them are all pickeys! I learnt the hard way a few months back when I was offered £130 over the phone but when they arrived they said they'll give me £30 tops! what a pair of mugs!

Oh, and another thing. They tend to take you're details and commit fraud with them. Another reason to stay clear.

    Hope this helps.
  • I'd keep the car and sell everything I could individually.

You'll find people will need wing mirrors, sun visors, radio, centre console, door handles, etc.

If you have the patience to sell them all individually then thats the way I'd go. You'll make more money that way :)
