Me and the gf are looking to go away for a couple of days in late May/early June. It'll be a budget trip so we'll be driving there and staying in the cheapest place available (probably a travelodge). We don't fancy a city break. I think somewhere near the beach or in some scenic countryside would be best. However I don't want it to be too isolated so we're forced to eat somewhere super expensive!
We live near Portsmouth, so ideally we want it to be within <4 hours drive.
The only place I've actually been in the UK is Cornwall which was lovely.
Any suggestions as to places to look at?

The north coast of Devon - beaches, moors and loads of B&Bs so no need to resort to a Travelodge. Try Barnstaple if you want a small town. Google and I both reckon it's inside your four hour limit.0

I was going to say Portsmouth as that's one of my favourite south coast places but you already live there
I really enjoyed going to Ramsgate a few years back, some excellent restaurants interesting scenery, yes on the flight path a bit but I thought it was really nice.
For south west Yes North or South devon offer so much scenery so many to choose from. How about Looe just inside the cornish border, again beautiful and dramatic loads of accommodation0 -
Bournemouth--city and beaches with beautiful harbour.mfw'11 No68- 55k mortgage İO--little to nothing saved! i must do better.0

Or why not leave the car at home, and nip across to the IoW?0 -

Thanks for all the suggestions so far folks.
I'm liking the idea of Devon as if we head to the western-end of it we'd have the choice to maybe do a beach trip one day and exmoor/dartmoor national park the next.0
