Hi there

I currently connect my monitor to my desktop via vga , both have dvi connections as well, What advantages does DVI have over VGA ?

Many thanks

much higher resolution and better response time.

DVI is like HDMI but without sound (yes there are other differences, but essentially the same)

VGA is fine at lower resolutions, say 1280x1024 and below. If you ever notice any shadowing or interference then you should buy a DVI cable, if not, bit of a waste of money. VGA is analogue and doesn't do so well at long cable lengths too.
  • Rather than telling you where people are not correct in their responses and not giving you any answer at all, I'll point you to the Wikipedia Page for DVI and the one for VGA

You can have a read and see if it makes any more sense.

    Rubbish.

We were running monitors well above 1080p in the 90's (1600x1200 was even available on low end ones) and with 100Hz and higher - higher than LCD screens of today and you got no motion judder or blurring that is present on even the highest end LCD.

Response time has absolutely nothing to do with whether it is VGA or HDMI.

Got to love these forums, there is always someone like this.

Ban the word "rubbish" - its far more effective to politely, or even using humour, disagree - with hopefully some substance rather than opinion. So many posters forget that the average guy asking questions is not a techie, doesn't want extreme cost/maintenance opinions - there are exceptions of course.

Frankly back to the OPs question for day-to-day computing you won't notice the difference, if you're gaming and streaming films etc the quality of the monitor itself is more important, secondly, going forward VGA will eventually be phased out (laptops will probably jump straight to HDMI), just leaving us with DVI/HDMI until the next idea comes along.

No one has asked the obvious of course , which is which graphics card and which monitor, and which version of the standards of VGA and DVI each supports and even so are we talking pure Video apps or "text" etc , or for those who prefer the alternative spelling ect
If so, was all this posturing pointless?

So, how is (s)vga digital to analogue to digital, as good as digital to digital?

edit - beat me to the question.

They just get better and better, maybe one day they will come up with an original insult, which you have been reported by the way.

I pity the the people you build pc's for then.

VGA - needs converting to analogue and then back to digital, which was fine for the old CRT monitors, but not for LCD (could go into clock correction, phase or banding, but can't be bothered).

DVI - no need to convert, signal starts as digital, output as digital straight to monitor.

So to Notyourrealname, seeing as you been building pc so long, maybe it is time for a visit to specsavers.

Done 16 years in printing and 3d modelling, where 1 role was to calibrate all equipment, have compared numerous monitors with vga and dvi connections, there is a discernible difference.
Just one question really as highlighted in red , how does the original Video stream get into digital to start with, surely it all starts with a wave

Hey Mikey, put everyone out of their misery, if you've spent £150 on Graphics, then I would spend a couple of quid on a DVI cable, hopefully you will notice the difference. It only leaves you find the right type. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Visual_Interface
