Cat D check

Hi All

Looking to buy a used car from a work colleague, the car is CAT D, is there a way of finding out the extent of the damage that occurred?

Thanks

  • Unless he has any, no. You can only get an inspection of the current state of the vehicle.
  • Very bad idea.

    A) Buying a car (no matter the damage/catergory/extent) that has been written off. There could be damage that hasn't been noticed

    B) Your putting yourself in a very awkward position if something goes wrong.
  • My write off was a CAT D and the sump on the engine was facked. I wouldn't buy it back if someone handed it to me on a plate, much as I miss it.

customer of mine got her car stuck on one of those rising bollards splitting the sump in two
i told her it would be a write off
main dealer got the go ahead to repair it
so this car wasnt classified as a cat d and therefore you wouldnt know if you came to buy it
it was one of those horrible MINI jobs made out of old allegros

Nothing wrong with buying a cat d as long as you are paying the right price, about 2/3rds of normal price. OP how long ago was it put back on the road? if it was a few years ago then dont worry, if only recently then get it checked out before you buy.
    Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.
  • Fair enough to people that would pay a car that hasn't been written off, i wouldn't go near one thats been in an accident.

How do you know you're not driving one that has? After all, they only come up in a check if its recorded and Ebay is full of accident damaged cars that aren't on the register. If someone doesn't put in an insurance claim, it doesn't go on the register.

Its an 05 plate and my colleague has had it say 3-4 years, he actually bought it as CAT D himself and is selling to me for a very knock down price which fits my budget!

    there you go then

and so long as he isnt selling it because of issues
  • cat D could mean a number of things, its the cost of repair plus any added costs for example recovery costs, storage costs and hired car, and high end dealer rebuild costs.
So all of these gets added and the insurance decides if its feasable to put back on the road, it doesnt mean they are dangerous to use, but this depends on where the damage was and how good the repair is.
I have bought a cat D and repaired it myself and sold it on, the damage was minimum and was a great buy.
You could buy any car and no one knows if its been bumped or even recorded, when you buy a damaged one its just floating around in your head all the time thats its been i a bump " so what"
