  • Just realised that my beloved Escort is over 10 years old this year - I didn't consider that I wouldn't be able to get the cheapo £6.50 cover w/ cashback from the AA, for example!

Does anyone know of the cheapest option (for the most basic cover) for a car over ten years old?

The RAC have sent me a renewal fixing my price at £28 (but minus last year's cashback of course) - but haven't mentioned the age of my car. Can't they tell that from my registration? Would my cover be invalid if I just renewed?

RAC personal cover is £13 after cashback for cars over 10 years old
  • Thank you :) Can I just not renew my current policy with them and take out a new one in order to take advantage of that?

Wouldn't you end up with 2 policies if you did that?

You wouldn't get any cashback (via the cashback sites) on a renewal.
  • No I don't want two :p I said:

    Heheheh :)

Edit: Just realised how dodgy my grammar was there... blame it on being tired today!

    Hi all,

Im looking for breakdown cover that will cover me on any car but also tow me to the garage of my choice rather then a local garage.

I dont mind paying a bit more knowing that the car is going to an independent garage that know and trust.

    Is there any such providers?

    Thanks
    jig

Can anyone suggest advice most breakdowns take the car to a 'local'garage rather then a garage of choice.

If you pay for "onward" cover, they will take you to your choice of destination.

Thanks for the reply. What if the breakdown happens at home or one mile within I think most do not take you on your onward journey.

Insteead they take it to a local garage.

Does any one know of a breakdown service that takes you onwards?

My suggestion was for you to take the extra "onward" cover, each breakdown service have a title for it - (RAC call it "recovery"). This is intended to get you to your destination in the event of any breakdown. You nominate your own destination.
If we can't repair your vehicle locally within a reasonable time, we'll take your vehicle and up to 7 people to your home or a single address in United Kingdom, Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man

I just thought I'd hi-light my experience here as the general view seems to be that the big ones don't reward loyalty.

    My reason for posting too.
    I recently called the AA to cancel my membership after nearly 30 years . . . . . .
I've two years on you. My phone call to the AA was today. £115.50 (Roadside £59, Relay 56.50) was the renewal cost.

I mentioned my interest in IC Breakdown (£29) and Autoaid (£37), stressing they are both reputable, well-regarded concerns backed by Equity Red Star at Lloyds and either service would suit my needs. I also made it clear the present online offer (£69) would be insufficient to dissuade me from leaving and threw in that my infrequent use of their services made it impossible for me to jusify to myself paying more than what IC Breakdown wanted.

The final result: I was given complimentary Relay for life and Roadside for £37 for this year and future years.
Still, I decided to stay with them as I don't mind paying a bit of a premium for the convenience of not having to "pay and claim".
Thanks to the many useful posts on this forum I'd sold myself on either the Autoaid or IC Breakdown offering but convenience and a good deal left me with the AA.
So any AA (and possibly RAC) members out there who are paying the standard rate and have been with them for a long time - It's worth giving them a ring and seeing if you can get a better price. ;)
    Seconded.
