Could it simply have been added at some point and would this make any difference?
This will be exactly what happened, although it will be difficult for you to construct a robust mis-selling complaint if you can no longer remember purchasing the insurance!
It won't have been added without your knowledge and permission and will have shown on every monthly statement when your account had a balance.

Thanks both. Taff what you say would fit. I know I added cards for other people after taking it out. Monryineptitude, that's not really what I wanted to hear! I can't remember signing for ppi but then I can't remember taking the card out either. I was relying on the fact I was self employed as reason enough. I certainly couldn't claim I'm sure it wasn't explained or anything.

You will have to check it didn't cover self-employed. In most cases, it would have, you would have had to sign on to activte it though, it doesn't function as a replacement wage in slow times.

You wouldn't have signed for it, you would have verbally agreed to it over the phone.

Exactly. You can't make any allegations about the sale if you don't know.

This would only be a valid complaint if you were self-employed when you agreed to the PPI and (far more importantly) if being self employed would have excluded you from claiming. Most PPI did cover the self-employed, so you'd need to check.

This forum isn't for posting "what people want to hear", I'm afraid.:)

Most PPI does actually cover the self employed. However, a significant minority does not. So, you may wish to check with the card provider if yours does cover you. If you phone them and ask and make a note of the name, if they tell you that you are not covered, then you have a strong complaint reason and the name of someone that told you. If they tell you that you are covered then you know that wont be a valid complaint reason.

Of course you're right moneyineptitude and I apologise! I think I was just looking for encouragement. Is there a norm for cards? This is a Lloyds mastercard. Would they normally have excluded the self employed or do the terms vary person to person?

I'm afraid only the Bank can tell you this for certain. Do as Dunstonh suggests and ask them directly.

As others have said, only the bank would be able to confirm this.

Some businesses still won't uphold cases on this basis though - explaining that despite exclusions in the unemployment cover, you could have benefited from other features.

See what Lloyds say, then consider your options at that point.

Help - I have had a credit card with MBNA since 1998 and they have calculated that I paid - £700 (most before 2009). They have offered me £1250 (with the usual non admittance blurb). Breakdown is £700 PPi, £400 interest(8%) and £85 in associated interest. There is also a small tax payment. No mention of their high rate of debt interest. Does this sound right? They say its their final offer. Any advice / thoughts appreciated.
